Question about LG Optimus L9
Buy a new battery for the phone, possibly been fried.. charging causes this

Incorrect. New battery is not the cause. Whats causing this overheating on your phone could be the following:
1). You have too many open apps running in the background which makes the processor run at higher speeds; causing the phone to get hot.
2). Using 4G compared to WiFi, does increase the temperature of your phone. Therefore, use WiFi when available to prevent this.
3). Make sure you have all your settings off when not using.. For example... Bluetooth, GPS, 4G, Wifi, etc... Leaving this services running while not using them causes the phone to overheat.
4). If you run certain games that require a lot of physical memory, your phone will heat up.
5). Using your phone on hot environments.
6). Do not use your phone while charging.
Take note on this suggestions and will definitely improve your smartphone temperature.
