Question about Toshiba DOCSIS Cable PCX1100 Modem

1 Answer

Cable connection drops perodically

I have a Toshiba PCX1100. It's at least 6 years old. Recently my cable connection drops. The browser loses connection but it restores in just a few moments, sometimes as little as 1 minute to as long as 5 minutes. I have found rebooting the cable modem can sometimes help. It has gotten worse, happening with more frequency. I have used both Firefox and IE, with the same result.

Is the problem with my provider or do I need a new "modem"? Or is it something else?

If I need to replace the modem can you suggest one, I use Comcast.

Thanks.

I removed Norton after running a scan with the same result. In the past Panda appeared to cause most of my connection problems, thats why I stopped using them.

    Thanks.

It may be a problem with your security software as well. do you have norton, macafee, trend micro, panda security or anyone else. Please uninstall it and check it after that.

Are you certain of the connection? Sometimes the connector becomes loose or otherwise loses integrity. Maybe it's the cable (HDMI, right?)--or both the TV's connector and that. They may become worn.

Be careful with your LCD screen--they are more delicate than most people realize.....

There are no analog channels anymore as far as I know, if you mean the channels that are local and provide an off the air signals, you need to connect an antenna for off the air signals, it may be possible that at your father's place the off the air signal was strong enough to receive them. Try going in to the menu signal type select "Air" to see if that makes a difference, of-course you will lose the cable channels until switch back to "Cable" .Hope this helps, KA

Try cable connection, the X-Box will run better on online games anyway with cable connection.

WEP mode was obsolete years ago and represents a real security hazard.
Changing the router for a router with AES2 will enhance your security. Cable will make security better too.

Hi,

It can be an issue with the modem or with the line. When the line drops the link then the modem shows only two lights. And, when you power cycle the modem (unplug and replug it) it establish the session again with the comcast.

So, i'll suggest you to get the line checked first and if comcast finds that line is working fine then get the modem replaced.

You need to access the modem setup screen and see what the signal and signal to noise ratio is. The reason most modems drop the connection is because the signal gets weak. Since you are using cable, any connections to that cable cause it to lose signal. If there are splices, or splitters before that modem, each one can cause a 3 dB or more loss and 3dB in half your signal. When the signal drops past a specific level, the modem cannot use it and cuts the connection.
