SOURCE: Graphic equalizer

In general all equalizers, being designed to be in a Tape Monitor loop, have the option to Equalize either the Source or the Tape or nothing. Check for that control and toggle it. My old ADC SS-525X has pushbuttons whose settings (Tape/Source) are not easily determined. I always have to play around with it to know which is selected.

I'm betting your EQ is processing the program that would head out to an attached tape deck.

SOURCE: My TX-SR702 receiver often displays a 'Dialog

Need to know your source and exactly how that source is connected to the receiver. Also need to know what surround sound mode you are using and whether the program material that drops out is compatible with that decoding format. Might be as simple as changing surround modes when this happens, but you should know that many cable boxes and some disc players routinely drop their digital audio signals from time to time and can give you these symptoms. Best remedy is to call Onkyo tech support with all of your information requested above documented in one place. They can help you troubleshoot while you are in front of your receiver.

most cooling fans in receivers only come on when they are needed. Some turn on at higher volume levels, others will not turn on until the unit gets too hot.

You may think you're getting more power but you're probably only getting more volume. Adding external processors does not increase amplifier power.

IF and only if, your receiver has connections labeled as "pre-out" can it be connected to an external amplifier.

If it does, then you connect from the left and right channels from the receiver, to the left and right channel on the amplifier.
