Mdt 16.5hp wil not turn over fast enough to start engine

New batt. new starter. soilnoid, engine will start to turn over until it reaches compression and then it stops just like a weak batt.

The valves need adjusting. They are too loose and bypassing the compression release on the cam when trying to start.

2005 jaguar VDP 4.0L. Very hard start. Have replaced map and crank sensor, egr valve and intake.


in what way is it hard to start does the engine turn over fast or slow, fast is low compression in the piston chambers slow can be the battery or the starter motor wearing out. ( starter motor has bushes to turn the motor these wear out and cannot turn the engine over fast enough to start.

Engine turns over about 3/4 of turn,won"t start,been running good,new batt,new plugs,new air filter


check and see if you have gas in the oil if you do rebuild carb if not replace starter is bad

06 dodge nitro 2.8 diesel wont start but will start on ether every time , it wont start hot or cold unless a squirt of ether is used.,


First off, ether is not the way to go at all! You'll end up messing up the piston rings with continuous use. Also with using ether engines tend to get "addicted" to it (its the only way they will start after some time as the rings get burnt and compression under normal cranking isnt enough)

The fact you can start the engine on ether means fuel prob isnt the problem. I would have said the problem was probably your pre-heating system and to check your plugs, wiring and fuses for the pre-heating system but the fact hot start doesnt work either doesnt make sense.

How long have you been using ether? If it has been for an extended period then I have a feeling the piston rings might be shot and full compression cant be reached during cranking and the ether just kickstarts your engine into starting. Any smoke out the tailpipe?

I would still check the glow plugs.

WillNot start batt., good starter, good all fuzzes good


If the engine is not cranking over, it could be the clutch safety switch
(standard trans), Neutral safety switch (automatic) or ignition switch.

If the engine is cranking but not starting, it is not the starter, battery
or alternator. Check fuel supply, ignition and compression.

what engine does it have? also try using jumper cables between the battery and the starter this will see if the cable is bad

88 rx7 run but wont start


The FC3S is notorious for this and fueling issues. Check all ground points, battery cables and connections. Check the draw from the starter. If the voltage drops below 10V there is not enough power for the ignition, causing weak spark. It really needs to spin over 200rpm cranking. Pop starting does not necessarily mean the compression is good. You need to make sure it cranks fast enough to get a proper compression test with rotary tester, New NGK plugs, new NGK plug wires.

When ignition switch is turned to start I get a small click but starter does not engage


Hi,

If the starter or solenoid clicks but nothing else happens when you attempt to start the engine, there may not be enough amps to spin the starter. Or the starter may be bad. A poor battery cable, solenoid or ground connection, or high resistance in the solenoid itself may be the problem. A voltage check at the solenoid will reveal if battery voltage is passing through the ignition switch circuit. If the solenoid or relay is receiving battery voltage but is not closing or passing enough amps from the battery to spin the starter motor, the solenoid ground may be bad or the contacts in the solenoid may be worn, pitted or corroded. If the starter cranks when the solenoid is bypassed, a new solenoid is needed, not a starter.
Most engines need a cranking speed of 200 to 300 rpm to start, so if the starter is weak and can't crank the engine fast enough to build compression, the engine won't start. In some instances, a weak starter may crank the engine fast enough but prevent it from starting because it draws all the power from the battery and does not leave enough for the injectors or ignition system.


If the lights dim and there is little or no cranking when you attempt to start the engine, the starter may be locked up, dragging or suffering from high internal resistance, worn brushes, shorts or opens in the windings or armature. A starter current draw test will tell you if the starter is pulling too many amps.


A good starter will normally draw 60 to 150 amps with no load on it, and up to 200 amps or more while cranking the engine. The no load amp draw depends on the rating of the starter while the cranking amp draw depends on the displacement and compression of the engine. Always refer to the OEM specs for the exact amp values. Some "high torque" GM starters, for example, may have a no load draw of up to 250 amps. Toyota starters on four-cylinder engines typically draw 130 to 150 amps, and up to 175 amps on six-cylinder engines.

Could I please have the basic start procudure for the poulan 2375 Borrowed from a friend. won't completely turn over


1) Have fuel tank full of a mixture of 50:1 gasoline and 2 cylce oil.

2) Have bar chain oil tank full.

3) Push down choke to full

4) Pull over engine 2 times.

5) Push choke off

6) Pull over engine. If it does not start you may have flooded engine ect.
Please let me know.

My briggs&stratton ohv 17 hp electric starter will not turn over


I worked at a tool rental center while attending college and encountered the problem that you are having many times. The problem was caused be a variety of issues however can be determined by checking the following:
Worn starter motor bearings that would be indicated by higher than normal amp draw. Check for hot starter motor or hot cables.
Weak battery. The battery should be removed and tested for free at auto parts store. The battery should be replace every season to extend the life of the starter motor.
Belts or hydraulic pump that is not fully releasing from engine pulley or output shaft. Remove the spark plugs from the engine and tune engine by hand, it should turn rather freely.
Finally, compression release feature of engine is not working properly. Check engine service manual for proper adjustment of valves so that compression release will work. Finally check oil level for over full. Too much oil will raise compression. Good luck with your problem and email for more info.
