I spray some gas in the carboraitor. It runs for about 5 sec. and stops. There is gas in the tank.
Your Coleman power generator's carburettor is clogged. Your can tell that this is so, since
when you circumvented the carburettor (by spraying fuel), the engine worked.
Last time I fixed a clogged carb, I put it into a coffee can, hosed it down with carb cleaner spray (and some WD-40, which I had alot of at the time), and let it sit in cleaner fluid for 3 days.
It worked perfectly after that.
Failing the "soak it in cleaner" solution, the next step to getting your carb to work is to rebuild it, by purchasing a carburettor rebuild kit for your specific carburettor.
Next time, instead of spraying gas (this provides gasoline like a primer bulb would), you could also try spray "Starting Fluid" available at any car parts store - but gasoline works too. Anytime I debug a small engine, there's a can of spray starting fluid nearby.
