It depends on the universal remote and on how complete their coding is.
I always suggest using the Logitech harmony remote. It comes with all features of any OEM remote Including video input etc.

Got a Sanyo DS25320 and using a universal remote. The screen is blue and says Video and when I hit menu it only gives me the option of auto/ manual/ game or language, can not get to the other selections....

The tv universal remotes are having very limited options in functions and tv universal remotes are only work correctly are like buttons power on/off volume up/down and channels up/down.Menu button and a Video setting option modes functions setting are another story all together. These two functions Menu button and Video setting modes funtions will not work correctly in any tv universal remotes.Because these Menu and Video setting modes are belong into the internal setting of the tv itself. It will only work correctly with the tv original remote only.Try website like Remotes.com to buy the tv original remote to use.

I have a Universal Remote but can't get the tv into Video Mode.

Try TV/Video button on your universal remote or some similar button that'll change the input, also try connecting to back ports of TV.

Sanyo stuck on video mode

Yippie, I figured out a solution that worked!!! I have a univeral remote from comcast, on that remote near the bottom left is a small button that says (input) tv/vcr, press that one time and whala!! the tv video screen was gone, I had to manually change the channel from the tv channel button on the unit. once I changed the channel to 3, my universal remote worked... the button is the second one from the bottom left... I was on hold with sanyo for a long time and just kept trying on my own, so good luck!!!!

Sanyo DS31590 31" TV Can I get the tv to go into tv/video mode without a remote but from the tv menu directly?

Nope. Remote control is required... However some universal remotes come with this button available in the preprogrammed code. I had a cheap GE universal remote that I used to replace the original when my 2 year old smashed it. I now have a sony universal remote and it's default code (one of them) for Sanyo tv's also works for the video/input button.

Video mode

the answer to your ques is. go buy a universal remote control. since your tv is made by thomson electric. (ge@rca)you can prob get a rca universal remote at wallmart or walgreens. you won't need to reprogram. it everytime you change baterys. after you get set to turn on and off just hit tv/vcr button on remote or select channel 91 or 92 (on some models that is your video for rca/ge) good luck doctordave
