It may, but they charge you for it. It it easy to load and hard to get rid of once they have installed their software on your system.
There is more information available on Apple Support Communities.

You can clean the Mac yourself with apps from the app store.

What antivirus software do you recommend for my iMac. I am having problems with pop-ups and other interruptions.

You say you are just beginning-do you mean that you are new to Apple? If you are coming from Windows, your question is understandable. The short answer could be: you don't need any antivirus software. I strongly recommend that you go to and search for discussions on antivirus ware for Apple. The discussions are very informative and will explain my answer (better than I can). I switched from windows to Apple in November, 2011 and tried a paid antivirus software: MacKeeper; and a free software: Clamxav. MacKeeper is a scam, don't waste your time or money. Clamxv is one of the few programs recommended for Apple systems. I recently uninstalled it as it seemed to be slowing my system down.
Re: pop-ups: if you are using Safari, go to preferences-security- web content and click the box-Block Pop-up windows. You may find that depending on what on-line work you are doing, you may need pop-ups to be enabled so this not a perfect fix. Also, make sure your Safari is up-to-date.
Finally, stay away from bad sites. You know, the ones everyone warns you about! Good luck, and enjoy your Mac!
BTW, I have had no virus/malware/trojan horse issues.

Unwanted pop ups on my mac

Chances are you downloaded and installed something that not only wasn't needed, but completely unnecessary for a Mac (MacKeeper or something else). These apps ALSO install unwanted and unasked for browser re-direct software.

You need to do two things immediately, followed by one very important step after that.
  1. If you haven't already done so, download a different browser software as backup for future issues (Firefox, Chrome or Opera are accepted as best alternatives).
  2. Click the link below for Adware Medic. Install this software, run the program, and then please donate to the developer if you feel a smooth running Mac is worth it to you. It will ask to restart your computer once it's done.
  3. Download AppZapper or AppCleaner. AppZapper gives you five free zaps and then you need to buy it, or just use AppCleaner to remove ANY AND ALL "Clean Up/Optimizing" software, ANY AND ALL anti-virus software... if you haven't noticed by now, AV software on a Mac is pretty pointless since it didn't snag your browser re-direct software.
That should solve your problems. If not, let us know here!

Spinning wheel

MacKeeper is scam ware. Close whatever browser allowed it to rear its ugly head, and Quit Safari or Firefox to quit the spinning wheel. If its got a tight grip on your system hold the off/on button down till computer does a hard shut off. Try not to do this frequently. Run Disc Utility and verify Permissions-Fix permissions and remember to have Block Pop Ups checked. MacKeeper will bypass the pop ups block anyway but quickly close a browser window that is usu. blank looking and be careful clicking on ads, streaming video, etc that allows it in the gate. Run and Ap Cleaner and get rid of MacKeeper immediately and hunt and destroy ALL remnants of it on your Mac.
Check out info from Apple @ MacKeeper. Do not install MacKeeper

File with ? mark in Mac OS x Lion.

Hi Peter. Running MacKeeper is no guarantee of anything. If anything it's a blight on the Mac world.
Restart the Mac and hold down the mouse click for about 10 seconds. The CD drawer should open. You may be lucky and your snowleopard may well start your Mac. If it does, after you get the what language page on the next page, instead of pressing continue, go up to the utility menu and select Disk Utiliy. Run Repair Disk from there and then try and start your Mac normally. If you get it running - ditch Mackeeper.
