New nuvi 255w will not speak since free upgrade by disk

Easy Steps to Upgrade Garmin Nuvi 255w:

Firstly, Install the Updates manually.

Connect the USB cable to your pc and then to the Nuvi.

Launch The Garmin Express Software on your device.

Choose the Nuvi 255w from the available devices.

If you see the map updates available, you are prompted to install them all.

I'm afraid the 255w does not speak street names. A satnav needs to have "Text To Speech" capability before it can speak the names and the 255 doesn't have it.

Maps for most GPS devices are updated several times a year. Your map is from 2010 and should be updated. You can go to the garmin site and pay to download and install upgraded maps or do a google search for map upgrades and you'll find some services offering lifetime upgrades for a few dollars more than the Garmin one time upgrade. I did this and have had no problems updating the maps on my Garmin Nuvi 250.

The Nuvi 255W is capable of TTS (text-to-speech) and speaking street names. Please see this link on how to set the unit up to speak street names:

I had the same problem with my nuvi 255w. Called tech support at Garmin and they told me one of the voices under Tools, Settings, Language, Voice has to end in a persons name. I had British English selected and it did not speak street names. When I selected Austrailian Englich - Karen, the street names all work fine.

You will need to do the following to get your unit to speak street names.
Tools/Settings/Language/Voice,select one that has TTS after its name.
I would suggest that you go on Google and download the 60 page complete Manual which also has Troubleshooting in it.

Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.html Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..

Maybe it is looking for the GPS? You have to use a USB cable and plug the GPS in. The computer sees it as another drive, that is where you can add photos, POI, etc. Without the GPS plugged in, Garmin can not connect to download maps. Hope that helps
