SOURCE: I get static pops when

First verify that OTHER guitars work flawlessly with the same cable and amp.

This is the season of low humidity and static discharges. These are usually reduced by raising humidity to 40% or greater.

Static develops from certain clothing and shoes rubbing and can discharge through the guitar cable as it builds up. If you can shuffle your feet and cause more static, then get some "Staticide" spray to spray on the floor where you perform.

I would NOT modify your guitar due to the value of it unless you find a broken ground wire someplace.

SOURCE: Having just purchased a new

You are using a Gretsch with this? This is a tiny amp useful for ONLY low levels as a practice amp. If you turn up the gain the unit will distort as the tiny speaker just can't handle high levels. An appropriate level would be if *********** could tolerate sitting alongside it. For the hum situation... does it hum with NOTHING plugged in? If so, probably the wrong adapter is being used. If it doesn't, then your guitar is probably picking up magnetic interference... major source of that type interference is "wall warts" power adapters. The only solution is to keep distance from the source to your guitar. Poor quality guitar cables can let in hum as well.

SOURCE: gretsch G5120 strings go severely sharp on open D chord

Are you, by any chance, pushing the strings a little too hard? You may be unaware of it, but some people who are used to playing power or bar chords, tend to push too hard in first position. On an electric guitar, this can cause the unwanted sharping. Plus, if you're more attuned to playing acoustic guitar, this can sometimes happen as well. I don't know if this is the problem, since I've never seen you play, but you might want to check it out.

I have my Father's Gretsch Grover Deluxe Guitar. I can't find a serial# on it, or in it. I know he had it in 1939. Is there any other way to find out the actual date of the guitar?

Only by searching around pre-war Gretsch models on Google. The fact it has Grover Deluxe tuners may help narrow it down. For instance does it look like this one (a Synchromatic 100)?

Gretsch serial number

There are several sites for instruments. I would personally go right for the Gretsch site. They should have a history of their products. Another way is to search for "Gretsch Serial Numbers".

Gretsch guitar serial numbers

Hi John,
all Gretsch guitar models start with G6. Could it be that you misread the model number? Can you post a picture. For reference check out the Gretsch website at
http://www.gretschguitars.com/
it could be that you came to own quite a nice guitar.
Include indications on the general state of maintainance.

Gretsch serial number 0110690-58

Looks like a 2001. The first link below indicates that the Modern Era (Pre-Fender) guitars had a 6-digit serial with a 3-digit suffix.

However, this page of 2001 Gretsch guitar models shows examples of 7-digit serials with 2-digit suffix:
