Question about Bolens 13.5 HP Manual 38-in Riding Lawn Mower with Briggs & Stratton E

Had my yard almost done when i hit a low spot and think my blades couldnt move b4 i could stop it quit and when i tried to start it back up it canked bout 3 times started turning over than BANG and smoke, is this an easy fix or pro job?

This is most likely the flywheel on the motor that has slipped out of timing. You need to replace the woodruff key and set the flywwheel back in line with the slots for the key.

I hit a brick, lawnmower won't move help

check for bent crankshaft at blade connection point. do this by removing spark plug and turn the mower on its side with carburator side up, now spin blade by hand and see if it will spin without a wobble. if it does not want to move, something else inside the engine is damaged and probably not worth fixing. if the blade does not spin true, it is a bent crank and might be able to be straightened by a mechanically inclined person without further damage to the motor. also check to see if the piston is moving while spinning the blade if it will turn at all. Two things likely happened, but one is real bad and I think that both probably happened here. The lesser of the two is a sheared flywheel key, which explains why it will not start. The greater is a bent shaft which is why it is so hard to turn even with the spark plug removed. To check for the bent shaft, remove the spark plug and tip the deck enough to get a good look at the blades and turn the blade. If there is a wobble of any kind then the shaft is bent. Also if the shaft is bent, with a push mower it is not cost effective to repair unless you are willing to do it yourself.

Everytime we hit low ground and stop the blades, it quits and won't start again. We took it in and the mechanic fixed it easy, but didn't tell us what he did. I caught bailing twine in it this evening...

I don;t know what kind of mower you have but if it is a push type mower where the blade is bolted directly to the engines crankshaft if you hit something solid enough to kill the engine it will sometimes shear the flywheel key. This throws the ignition timing off and the engine will not start. Hope this helps.

I had hit a somewhat hidden stump on the lawn..bending the blade. Took the deck off and replaced the bent blade. Put the deck back on and now the cut seems uneven. It appears that the deck is now...

I've only had luck removeing the deck, turn it upside down. Measure blade, mark, remove blade, insert large pipe over spindle, bend in direction. Re-install blade, and do it all over and over till straight. Measure in several locations.

Deck may be bent?

On your problem it is diffiuct to say. I don't know how old it is and if it has been run hard in gravel or how many roots you hit. However if the blades hit it hard enough you may have hit the deck brackets. You need to get it no concrte so you can mesure the for corners of the deck on the level surface, then check which side and if it's front or back that is higher. Most likely the lowering arm Is what is bent where the lever you Drop the deck down with is, look tthere first. Also look at the top of the deck and side to side at the lawen mower and see if you can see if the deck is up higher on one spot more than anywhere else. . I know this is confuseing but hope you understand what I am saying. I would also check the front axle mesure the top o the axle on both sides are they even? Yes? then mesure from ground to top of the hood on the lawnmower. Good luck.

Grinding Noise when moving

This could well be the diff trans assembly.
If the machine is relatively old, then it's probably due.
I'm afraid you're going to have to get on your hands and knees, in order to inspect the under side. Where the source of the noise is coming from.
Check for unusual wear, loose or missing fixings and oil stain's.
In general, anything that looks out of place.
The oil btw, should be changed regularly, as there is no filter that helps the 'lasting' life of the it.
Also, some of these could be signs of a fault of the engine, which could be quite serious.
But I think it's more likely, some loose or missing bolts. Check that everything that shouldn't move (Like the transmission), doesn't.
And while you're there, inspect the belts.

Wife hit hammer in yard tractor died turns over dont sound right took out plug some compression dont think the valves are moving will back fire ater cranking for a wile

Check your blades, replace with straight ones. It is impossible to further diagnose until you've done this, and it may be your only problem.

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.

Blade too close to ground

move them foward to raise wheel height. you can confirm by moving to full foward posistion on front wheels then adjust down to get height you desire.and repeat with back wheels and set accordingly. hope this helps..chris
