Which program and settings should I use on my En Genius ECB3500 for rental homes?

For your current router you want to set the following options to optimize your wireless network and make sure it runs stable:
Security mode: WPA2 with AES
Channel mode: manual
Wifi Channel: 11

In order to extend the range of your wifi network you will want to get an access point, or a second router and configure that one as an access point.

No internet

I had exactly the same problem with my EnGenius ENS202EXT. I was trying to set up an Access Point, hard wired to a FAST1704N V1.0 Router/Modem from Windstream communications.

I spent 2 days trying/altering as many different combination settings as possible, on the Engenius. It turned out in the end that I had alter an unnecessary setting in the Fast1704 modem/router. After I reset the modem to factory settings everything worked beautifully. I have great coverage and higher speeds than I ever had before.

Note: in addition to the fact that internet would not pass through to the Access Point I was trying to set up, neither would the FAST1704N V1. show up on the internal network. I could not find or communicate to the FAST1704N V1. through my own network until I reset my modem/router. After resetting the modem and getting internet through the AP, I went back an readjusted the critical settings in the modem. Everything working great.

WDS Setup

In a WDS network, all the access points need to be in WDS mode, and one of them needs to be wired directly to a routed internet connection.
Here is a very good detailed tutorial on how WDS works and how to configure and troubleshoot your own WDS network:

How do i hook up one router to get a signal from another one

You can set up a sort of siamese-twinning of routers to share a WAN connection through the use of what is called WDS. Information on how this works can be found here:http://www.keenansystems.com/newug/bblog/?postid=17.However, WDS slows down your internet connection by half, works only over relatively short distances, and doesn't work between different brands and models of router.A better general solution to setting up a point-to-point connection (example: to extend your wireless network from your house to an outbuilding workshop) uses a bridge instead of a second router. A router is an access point, while a bridge is like a more powerful version of the wireless card in your computer. Engenius makes relatively inexpensive indoor/outdoor bridge units (such as the model 1650). Since they are directional, you can point them directly at the house and extend your network over very long distances with very little power.

After a windy day lost wireless connection

For a new unit disconnect the eoc from the network and connect directly (through POE injector of course) to your laptop/pc.  then in network connections setup your lan port TCP/IP settings as follows.  ip 192.168.1.10 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 then gateway 192.168.1.1

point your browser to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 (one if it is in AP mode and the other address works if it is in bridge mode).

When configuring, I assign it an new static IP outside of the DHCP assignment range.

To see how it is setup afterwords you can use hyperterminal with a null modem cable to view the current config.  instructions on the engeniustech.com support page.
