If your Samsung remote does not offer some sort of code search capability you may only able to control your Samsung DVD player by pressing the DVD button to turn it on. It may be more practical to purchase an inexpensive universal remote and use it to control both your TV and your DVD player.
Most remote controls take AAA batteries, if you open the battery door, it should say "AAA" or "AA" there, which indicates the battery type.
As for the A/V cable, typically for a DVD player you will want a composite RCA video cable, which will be a cable with three connectors on each end, usually red, white, and yellow. Just match the connectors to the equivalent colours on the DVD player and the back of the TV.
The key is having at least a Universal Remote ($10.00 or less) that will operate your brand of TV. Your TV is only looking at "stations". You need to make it see Aux-1, Aux-2, or Line In mode. BUT, another trick is to run the DVD into your VCR (if capable). Select the VCR proper "input mode" (Aux-1, Aux-2, or Line In mode) then the DVD will play through the VCR and it will play through the TV on either channel 3 or 4. Problem solved!
Try looking on your tv's menu for "input" or "input select". This should allow you to switch to your front AV inputs. If that doesn't work hook into the coaxial cable in the back of the set (the one for your cable or satellite input. Plug the cable from the output or to tv side of your reciever into the input of the dvd player and run another lenghth of coaxial cable from the output of the dvd player to the coaxial input where your satellite or cable was plugged into the back of your set. When you want to watch a DVD just turn on the DVD player and the picture should come up. When you turn it off your satellite or cable should come right back.
