Question about JBL On Stage Micro Speaker Dock for Apple iPod - Aluminum

Open Question

JBL docking station speaker rattling

My unit is a bit old, I use it as the speaker for my PC. It has started to make an annoying rattle during any sounds with deep bass or crescendo. I've flattened out all the levels down to 0 on my realtek equalizer, and that helped a lot. But it still happens occasionally. Is there a way to tighten something up inside? It sounds wonderful aside from that. Thanks in advance for your help.

JRX125...there was a rattle/noise that indicated blown driver on midrange horn...replaced drivers, noise still occurs. discovered loose 1/4 in jack to tip of plug...tightened fit, but didn't trust...

The noise MIGHT be a resonance in the cabinet. The way to find out is to sweep a frequency upward to see if something rattles at certain frequencies... Don't be surprised to find several. Within the cabinet are the usual culprits: Wires rattling against the cabinet, loose debris, grilles and the logos on them, circuit boards with crossover hardware, cabinet wood that is not glued and rattles against itself. Things like bass port tubes can rattle.
Find an audio generator and sweep the cabinet from 50Hz to 10KHz and you will be surprised. Some speakers may have resonances as well. Expect things in your room to start rattling as well.
This is really the only way to find the problem. PLEASE wear hearing protectors at levels above 90Db.

Jbl radial dock connector broken

I have the same problem, but I got round it instantly by plugging my ipod into the speaker via the headphone port on the ipod and into the audio port on the speaker. The speaker came with a spare lead as you can plug any music player into it this way. The sound quality seems exactly the same and I dont have to throw away the speakers, hooray! If you have lost the lead you need a 3.5 mm male to male headphone lead, just pence in any electrical shop or amazon!

My docking station has a loose conection where the i pod sits!

You need to dismantle the unit and resolder the ipod socket. It is soldered to the board and the solder joints crack under the strain. This will happen to every JBL dock eventually.

How to open the jbl radial micro speaker set?

Bit late! Just remove the four rubber feet underneath (self adhesive). Take out the four philips screws. It's a bit of a mess inside - you'll have to remove the connectors and some screws to get to the i-pod connector. You dont need to remove the button pcbs just the main board. The i-pod connector pcb is on the end of the grey ribbon cable connected to the main board (the button end of the unit).
