When the car starts power steering won't work

New battery drained = something is still powered, open/short.
new ign switch and steering won't lock = something was not put together right and the ignition is staying on and draining the battery.

bad alternator or starter. If your wheel don't turn check power steering pump fluid or a bad rack and pinion.

If you are saying the steering is difficult to turn you could have a blocked hose or a problem in the gearbox.
Or something in the front suspension such as a faulty ball joint.

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? The reservoir for the fluid will be at the front of the engine, where the belt runs the power steering pump. If it's low or out add a little power steering fluid till full, then start car and slowly turn wheels back and forth from stop to stop-not too ******* the stops (when the steering won't turn further that way...that's what I mean by stops)....Turn wheel one way full travel, then reverse and turn the other way. Check the fluid level again, and add as needed.
If fluid is not low, the belt may be too loose to make the power steering pump work, or you may have a bigger problem that needs professional attewntion.

Check you power steering fluid, and check the tension of the serpentine belt. If it isn't tight enough, the pump won't turn properly.

forget start it won`t turn on but you have power to distributor i don`t under stand what you have yet the engine won`t crank over?? or it cranks but no start let me know thank you

you say stopped running steering locked up the steering lock is mechanical and has nothing to do with the actually running of the engine so i am presumming that the car was idling stalled on its own and the steering as you tried to restart it locked or the steering won,t turn it won,t if the engine s not running as it is helped by the power steering pump which doesn,t work unless then engines running but if the steering has just locked up then you won,t be able to turn the steering in which case you,ll need a new steering lock not that big a job yates210456
