try using command line utility like fdisk to see if the disk is being used by system resources at all . also see if the disk is listed in device manager when connected. plus refresh your usb ports through device manager or reinstall their drivers. If the disk is listed but not showing up in my computer then you may have to low level format it and repartition using any prominent disk utility like fdisk or partition manager.

Check to see if it shows up in "Disk Management".
Right-click My Computer >> Manage >> Disk Management.

If so, it may need to be formatted.

To format: Right-Click volume, and select format.

I have a 25M Storejet transcend hard disk 640GB. The transfer rate of the hard disk is very slow. Its about 700 KB/sec. What might be the problem?


The problem is that you have connected it to a "USB 1.1" port, which is much slower than connecting it to a "USB 2.0" port. If your desktop computer has a "USB 2.0" USB port, use it.
If not, buy an add-in PCI card to add "USB 2.0" ports to your computer.

I have a 320 USB External Hard Drive i store the data it is fine but when i try to copy the file from external hard disk it is getting an error "Cannot Copy CZ9EXML" & it will disconnects i...

Is this a file currently on the disk-drive? If so, then the blocks on the disk-drive "owned" by the file have gone "bad" -- those blocks cannot be correctly read.

It's a little surprising that a "full" FORMAT did not detect those blocks as being "bad", and mark those data-blocks as "never-to-be-used".

Avoid trying to read that file.

This might be an "early" indication that your disk-drive is going to fail.
Do *NOT* keep the *ONLY* copy of your files on the Transcend!

The Transcend is "partially" working -- compare it to an automobile with a full tank of gasoline and a dead battery -- the car looks to be OK, but it will not start.

If the WARRANTY for the Transcend is still valid, then Transcend will replace the device, at their cost.

But, all your "data" stored onto the Transcend is "gone" -- not retrievable.

If you can open the enclosure, you can remove the disk-drive, replace it with a similar "new" disk-drive, and "revive" your external storage device (like a heart-transplant in a human being).

it should have come with a disk insert the disk
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you should see a yellow question mark? right click to reinstall drivers

Dropped hard disk


A dropped hard disk that makes clicking sounds when you plug it into a computer is dead. It would be cheaper to get a new one, and I doubt if you could get anyone to repair it.
