No Rebel XT driver for Vista

I just switched to Windows Vista, and now I can't download pictures from my Rebel XT to the computer (and can't find a driver on the Canon site that would do this).

There is no driver that works for Vista, so reinstalling the driver does not help.

However (as I found elsewhere on this site) changing the camera communication setting to PTP solves the problem.

Try changing the "communication" setting on the camera from "PC Computer" to "PTP"
Menu > Tools2 (wrench/hammer/2) Communication = Print/PTP

I have windows 7, it even worked for that! THANK-YOU!! 2 days I've been at this! Reinstalled the software twice. Nothing worked. Neither Canon OR Microsoft helped. Gotta love FixYa, and the geniuses that give the answers of course. Thanx again 6killer! For a "killer", you certainly are a "lifesaver"! LOL!

I see there is a work around to use the Rebel XT with the Windows Vista 64 but will it work with Windows Vista 32?

Your camera doesn't care what operating system you're running on your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

You can download Vista drivers and utilities from Canon site (http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp). Select "Windows Vista" as operating system and click "Submit" to filter vista-compatible software.

I have lost my installation Cd for my digital rebel XT (canon) I downloaded the driver from Canon. com but computer will still not find the device?? When I try in Media Center, it shuts down the program???...

Bet you have Vista on your new computer. If so, it's a Windows Vista issue. Go to Canon's website and get and install the updated drivers for your camera. Here's the link (select Drivers and Download, then select Windows Vista, then look for, download, and install the driver for Windows Vista.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=325&modelid=11209

And if you end up pulling your hair out further fiddling with Vista, please see the following for a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos:

The drivers are located on the Canon website:

Use the drop down box labeled "Select OS" and select Windows Vista (x64).

You need to install the correct software on your computer. They are usually called drivers. Here is a link to the Canon Rebel Xt page from Canon with all sorts of goodies you can download. The most important section to get things going for you is the drivers. Select your OS from the drop down list, download and install. If you don't have drivers your PC or Mac doesnt recognize the fine piece of hardware... your camera. Hit me up if you're still stuck.

Downloading pictures

Yes, you need a driver so that your operating system understands how to interface to your camera. Canon Europe has a handy web page:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010192.asp

Enter your operating system and language, and you will get the choices of things that can be downloaded relevant to your camera. If you were using Windows Vista, for example, your choice would be "Canon Camera USB WIA Driver for Windows Vista". Install that, reboot, and then connect your camera again. It should be recognized by your computer.

My XT will not connect to Vista.

Well, that worked perfectly. Turn on your Rebel XT camera and under Menu then Tools go to Communication and set it to Print/PTP. Thank you to all you very smart people!
