Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Lg inverter air conditioner - WHEN OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE IS 0 DEG C OR A BIT LOWER, THE UNIT DOES NOT HEAT BECAUSE OF ICE BUILD UP INSIDE THE UNIT. PRESUMABLY THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE HEAT TRANSFER AND INSUFFICIENT HEAT IS IN THE OUTSIDE AIR. AFTER SOME TIME EG 1 HOUR, AS THE AMBIENT AIR HEATS UP THE UNIT MANAGES TO DEFROST ITSELF AND START HEATING. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO OVERCOME THIS PROBLEM? THE UNIT IS A DUCTED 15KW MODEL B55AWYN7G5.

SOURCE: RUUD heat pump system does not cool properly.

With a heat pump system there are always going to be a back up heat strip inside the Air Handler.

If you detect a faint humming in the Condenser call your local service company and ask them to come and replace your capacitor in the condenser. The humming is from the contactor engaging but not being able to start the compressor due to not having the required Microfarads to start it.

Let me know if this helps

It has lots of ice build up around outside unite i would say about 5 inches high around it. Is this normal in winter

Depends on the outside temperature as if the temperature is lower there will not be heat exchange and so frosting can happen.

Ice formed on outside of line!

try running the air conditioner in defrost mode. set the temperature to warmest while air conditioner is on, for about two minutes. then slowly move the lever towards cold, all the while having the vent set on outside air. once you move it toward cooler, move the vent switch towards recirculate from outside air.

when you have it on defrost, open the engine hood and push the air conditioner button. watch the lines and see if they begin to build frost. if not, move the slider toward cold a little bit at a time while watching the lines to see if they begin to build frost. if they do start to build frost at any point after running the defroster in A/C mode for a bit, you can always try positioning the temperature control towards the middle or run only the outside instead of recirculating vent.

Ice is forming on coil fins

Either your coil is dirty or filter is dirty. Worst case your low on freon which would make a coil freeze. But freon doesn't evaporate if your low there must be a slow leak.

Should the LG LS-K-1830CL outdoor unit ice over on the coils when operating in the heat pump mode? Would this cause the unit to not properly heat the room?

Running the heat pump in low outside ambient temps. will definitely cause the coil to ice up. An ouside temperature senor or a wind baffle should be installed in climates that get below freezing. This would definitely cause the heat pump to operate at lowered efficency and maybe not at all. It should go into defrost mode if the sensor is working correctly when the coil ices up.

Wall ac unit keeps freezing up inside.

No! You will not likely find any service on a product which has very little value. Frosting will sometimes happen if the outside temperature is to low. The outside ambient temperature is directly related to the pressures inside the refrigerating system. The lower the outside temperature is the lower the pressures will be in the cooling end of the air conditioner. In mechanical refrigeration pressures and temperatures are directly related.

If the outside temp. is lower than 32 deg. F it is normal for the outdoor unit to build up ice but not safe for the motor compressor. Because the safe outdoor temp. in heating is 5 to 64 deg. F but don't worry it has safety device to stop the operation.
