SOURCE: Need to remove rear wheels to replace tires on MTD riding mower.

most likely rust has taken over
find some liquid wrench or pb blaster and spray the axles liberally and let it penetrate the axles and wheel hubs where the axle goes through.
use a 2x4 and a hammer to tap against the wheel hub to try to move it down the axle then tap in back on to try to free it up as the penetrating oil works in, spin the wheel and tap in different areas of it
the worst case cenario would be to use a torch and heat the axle and hub up and drive it off, but it sounds as though you are moving it some and with some patience they eventually should come off
when you put them back be sure to coat the axle with some grease and do not forget to reinstall the key stock in each wheel, if they have it
the bolt in the center of the axle is all you need to remove and note where the washers came from and where they go back.

hope this helps you some

I have a 2 yr old MTD model series 790 riding mower and hard to turn.

First lift up the front tires of the ground with a jack. Look for a bent linkage bar or other damage or maybe foreign material that restricts the free movement of the linkage. Also check the front ball joints, axles and kingpins for lack of lubricant.

Why can't I get wheel and rim off axle after removing pin?

Linda, you may have to spray penetrate oil on both ends of axle where it goes through the rim, spray a couple times, and then leave sit over night. The next day the oil may have worked its way in, you may still have to use a heavy hammer and board to get the rim off.(board to help from causing damage to rim).
Put the board over the rim and tire and give it a few sharp blows to get it moving off the axle. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Mtd 42" riding mower rear drive belt keeps popping off pulley

Hi, check the idler pulley arm and return spring on that belt. Its most likely not pivoting freely allowing the belt to loosen when you operate the clutch, regards Phil.

Do you need a puller to remove tire off a yardman riding mower?

If you have successfully removed the wheel, You should be able to remove the tire, from the wheel, simply with a flat headed bar, or two.
Deflate the tire, then apply pressure, to break the bead.
Then insert the first bar to lever the tire over the edge.
Carefully repeat the process, and there you go.
Happy mowering:)

How to remove rear wheel of lawn tractor

You should be able to remove the bolt from the center with a 1/2" socket an slide it off the axle. You do not want to do any heavy hammering on the wheel because you could possibly drive the axle out of the transmission. MTD mowers are notorious for being hard to get the rear wheels off. If you do get them off or ever buy a new one, remove the rear wheels and coat the axles with anti-seize compound. Good luck

MTD Riding Lawnmower

Sounds like the axle slipped out of the differential. There is usually a snap ring on the axle which holds it in place. This could have broken, came loose, etc,

Major surgery needed.
