Question about Acer Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an acer 1000 running linux lite. I want to install windows xp via an LG external hard drive I have plugged the hard drive into the computer and inserted the hard drive set up disc but cannot figure out how to carry out the set up from the display that then appears showing the files on the disk. There is no guidance in the Acer application manual that comes with the computer as to how to do this. I also obviously need to be able to navigate my way through the set up for XP when I get the disc drive working and can insert the windows XP disc Can you help

Okay I if I understood it correctly You want to install windows XP from HARD DRIVE and not from a cd.

To install Xp from a dos promtp (Eg. c:\>) You will need to start dos first of all, with a boot diskette or a cd, linux won't do.

Since you are using a external hard drive I don't know if this will work or not, you will most likely have to get DOS with USB support to use the external hard drive in dos.

Basically ones you get into the dos prompt c:\> or any other letter and you have access to the setup files, you need to browse to the setup files, then open the i386 folder (cd i386) then run the setup file inside which is winnt.exe (type winnt.exe and press enter)

bootdisks for dos start up

Windows 98 Se disk with cdrom support recommended.

Usb - external drive support for dos
http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm

I don't think that the hard drive setup cd will actually let you to use the drive in dos, I think it would be best to install windows to the computer using a windows installation cd, that way is alot more simpler and easier.

Heres how you would install it from a cd:

insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

if not then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can either enter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you power up the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press in order to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install the OS

here's some info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php

heres a video on how to install xp, this video goes halfway the process, the rest of the process is very easy and only requires you to answer a few simple questions when they come up.

Good day. I bought this Netbook with Windows 7 installed. I need to format and reload Windows XP as I have software that I need to use that only works with XP, I have an external "USB CD Drive"...

Hi neil720...

Installing the external CD Player...
You will go and start up and install Windows XP by doing he following:
Plug in your external CD drive, and let windows install it into the system...
Once the CD is ready to go, shut down the computer.
***************************************************************************************
You will first need to format your hard drive, I will give you instructions on how to do that.

1...To format your hard drive and install XP:
To set you computer back to factory fresh settings you will need to format the hard drive and install the XP operating system and the drivers.

1.Format the hard drive:
You do this by double left clicking on "My Computer",then double left click the main drive (normally C drive).
When the window pops open, you will choose "Format"
Keep in mind that once you format your hard drive you will loose all your files, programs, pictures, etc that you installed since the computer was new.
So make your back up on a portable hard drive, thumb drive, etc.
2. Once the formatting of the hard drive is complete you will need to install the XP operating system along with the drivers.
You will now insert the CD's into your external CD player starting with #1 first and continuing until all has been installed.
After all has been installed, shut your computer off and restart.
That will bring your computer back to Windows XP factory new condition as far as operating is concerned.

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

Can i use an external hard drive to run an operating system (XP)

Yes. You can run an OS from an external hard drive. You have to install the OS to the External hard drive and will have to boot from the USB. I have tried that for Fedora Linux OS but not for XP. Basically all Operating systems boots up in the same manner. So definitely, its possible with windows XP also.

Thanks

There's no single way to install Windows XP. As there is no CD / DVD drive, you have two main choices:

1. Purchase an external CD / DVD drive. Plug it into a USB port on the Aspire, and then access the BIOS, Make sure the CD drive is first, and insert your Windows XP disc. You should now be able to install it normally.

2. Use a bootable Flash drive. This method will be far more difficult, and requires a moderate amount of experience with computers. First you will need to install QEMU on another computer. Create a hard drive the same size or smaller than the one in the Acer. Install Windows XP to it using QEMU. Copy the hard drive image onto a USB Flash drive. Now install some version of Linux on it, such as Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux. Howtos are available in the Related Links section below. Boot from the Flash drive, and access a command line. Find your hard drive in the /dev folder (probably sda or hda). Now issue the following command

dd if=image.img of=/dev/hda

This will make an exact copy of the hard drive image to the hard drive in the Acer. Waituntil the command is completely done. Now turn off the computer and unplug the flash drive. When you power it back on, it should boot into Windows.

My Dell won't boot up when I have my external LG disc drive on

is it that you are not able to boot up when the external drive is plugged in or not at all...
if it is the first case then it is mostly probably because the external disc drive at first when it starts functioning it takes close to 1A of current but the allowed current for maximum current allowed to be drawn as per usb protocol through usb port is 500mA... Linux doesn't care about this over current but windows very much does....

Install Window XP into Eee PC without external DVD drive?

Each computer needs its own operating system in which you do you have linux as a pre-install. If you want XP, you will need an external dvd/cd rom drive. It is worth it if you think about it...running xp, you're bound to run into other software you will likely need in the future, so getting an external cd/dvd drive would not be a waste of your money.

seems that it's a SATA drive and the drivers are not included in XP.
There are some tools available to include these drivers into the XP CD.
Search the net for 'xp-iso-builder' or 'n-Lite'.

This is not necessary if your laptop's got a floppy drive (i don't think so). Then the SATA drivers can easily be loaded by pressing F6 when booting from the XP CD.
