Try downloading and running Advanced System Care and Smart Defrag from iobit.com. It is free and works very well.

On most Compaq's of the CQ42 model type, there should be a little light on the top right hand corner of the touchpad, not much bigger than a pinhead. When the touchpad is active the light is out so you shouldn't see the lamp. Quickly double tap the area on the lamp and it should light up. This is an indication that the touchpad is now not active.

SOURCE: how to adjust brightness of
You can do this with function keys for that model. The letters may be different, if they are, refer to the pics of the keys; they are always the same.
From the Windows desktop, hold the Fn key and press the f7 key to increase or the f8 key to decrease the brightness of the display.

Glad to HELP YOU!
If your machine is OVERHEATING that means it's a SERIOUS PROBLEM with your fan.
Open your laptop (ONLY IF THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED!; if not go check your dealer for this procedure) and clean a little bit the fan. Almost sure the rotor is full of dust.
If the problem will persist after you will do that and you will re-assemble your machine - then REPLACE THE FAN!
Your computer is turning off because the sensors detect a too high temperature. So to protect your motherboard and all your circuits and devices it turns off. It's normal under such conditions.
But if you will continue to use it that way (overheated) you risk to damage it!
