Question about Boating
It sounds like it is starving for fuel. Do you store it out of the water over the winter? Or do you use it all year round? If it gets stored, you probably need to get the entire fuel system cleaned out. If you use it year round; when was the last time it received a full service? It could be worn out parts. Age is the enemy here; motors do different things over time depending on how they're used.

Most manufacturers demand the water pump be changed every 3 years.
If your thermostat sticks, you can over heat. You would also need to ignore or have a failed temp buzzer. Also at extreme temps, your temp sensor can burn up. SO if you heard the buzzer, and then it quit- that did not mean you were out of the woods.
If you could still run on your scalded pistons, I would think a light bore job with new pistons would fix it.
