How tointerface an audio technica mb 4k to computer

Is it possible to hook this mic up to a computer mic input (Compaq Pressario desk top) without going through a mixer, cable only? i am cuurrently going through a fostex mr8 and i have to pretty much swallow the mic to get a good signal from the mr8 output, the mic however seems to have a very good output. thanks - jim keith

As long as the microphone is getting power (via a seperate phantom power unit, or using batteries, the MB 4k can use AA) you should be able to plug into a computer with no trouble, as long as a couple other things are set. You'll need two things in addition to your mic and battery.
1) You need an adapter to go from XLR to 1/8". Go to www.sweetwater.com and search for "XLR to 1/8". They are around $10.
2) Your computer must have a "mic" level input. It is probably a red connector. If your computer only has a "line" level input (probably blue), then you will have to use the mixer, or some in between unit to up the output of the mic to line level.
Not sure why your mr8 is outputting so low. Make sure you have phantom power turned on.
Best of luck!

if it plugs into the line in or mic in using the 3.5 mm plug then no, the mic won't need a driver. Your playback and recording devices on your computer DO need drivers. Sounds like a computer config issue to me. Could be a few different things

I have a low level hum in the MIC like a motorcyle in mt AT 4040

Remember this is a condenser mic that REQUIRES phantom power. There are several failures regarding this phantom power delivery that COULD cause your problem.

A "LEAKY" mic cable that is not a fully balanced cable can cause the problem. Test with another cable to exhonorate your cable.

A failure of the input bypass caps in your amp/preamp can cause the input to become unbalanced and let in hum.

A phantom power that is improperly filtered can also cause this. Test using a different source of phantom power.

Remember that you can easily get feedback that may oscillate like hum if you have a monitor speaker anywhere in "earshot" of the mic. They are very sensitive and intended for studio use.
