SOURCE: i'm getting an HL1 reading

Possibilities:

1-low water flow (this heater needs 45 GPM minimum to operate safely
2-blocked heat exchanger (flush exchanger through drain ports)
3-Unitherm Governor (already replaced)
4- Bad bypass assembley or bypass spring (these bypass assembleys do fail occasionally)

Id start with making sure the water flow is proper, and if that checks out ok, id replace the bypass spring and assembley.

Note: when examining bypass assembley, if spring is worn or missing, start with this only as its cheapest)

My ray pack RP2100 is flashing HL2 what does it mean

HL2 = High limit switch 2 is open. The switch opens if water temp inside the inlet/outlet header exceeds 135 - 140 F.
If you reset the heater and the HL2 does not reset, then the HL2 is likely faulty. When you order a high limit, there are 2 types on these models. Red (135 F) or black (140 f).

If you reset the heater, the HL2 resets and the heater fires for a short time, then the problem is likely with restricted water flow inside the inlet/outlet header.
Check the Unitherm Governor (thermostat) and the Internal Automatic Bypass Valve.

If you are uncomfortable with this type of repair work, a good service technician can be a wise investment in not only your time but the safety of you and your family.

Need to install unitherm governor

Replacing UG is easy on polymer (plastic) header. Very difficult on metal. On polymer header you will find UG behind a cap located adjacent to where the plumbing goes in and out of heater. Take a long screw driver and use the shaft of the screwdriver in the grooves of the cap to unscrew it from the header (counter-clockwise). The UG should come out with the cap or be just inside and easy to grab. There is two clips on the cap that will hold the new UG while you screw the cap back in. The gasket isn't super important and even the manufacturer has said it can be left out, but it can be held in place with a couple drops of lubricant to make it easier if you want to use it.

My raypak heater lights, but does not heat the water.

Yes, there is a bypass, and it is controlled by what they call a unitherm governor. That is a fancy word for a thermostat, very similar to the one in your car. It sounds like yours may be stuck open, or the spring buggered out. They aren\'t too hard to check out if you are handy with a wrench. It is located right where the water pipes attach to the heater.
