As of 6/12/09, the over-air broadcast signals went to digital (ATSC) only. Your set does not have and ATSC tuner so it can not receive the new digital signals. The converter box converts the ATSC signals to the NTSC channel 3 or 4.

I had the wrong model number in mind. These units require that you select the ATSC mode. Similar to the older units that would require switching from air to Cable mode. Navigate the menus to select ATSC and the unit should be able to auto-program the newer signals.

There are actually 2 tuner circuits inside this set. As near as I can tell without taking an actual look inside, the switching IC has failed. Typically, this is a small IC that acts like an old fashioned switch to change the signal path to the ATSC tuner or to switch the outputs from the tuners to the remaining signal path inside hte set. Without taking measurements inside, there is no way to determine the exact cause of your problem. Something as simple as a defective voltage regulator IC could cause this as well. WIthout the proper power to the IC, it would remain in the default mode (NTSC) and "appear" to function correctly in the standard mode. Since the IC is controlled by the TV microprocessor, it too could be defective or the data line connected to the IC could have a failed filter capacitor on it which loads it down to 0 which may be the correct level for NTSC mode.

As you can see, there are numerous possibilities that require additional troubleshooting and tracing.

At this point, all we can recommend is that you get a detailed repair estimate from a service center. They should take the time to trace the problem and provide a parts/labor estimate for its repair.

    Please keep us posted.

I hooked up my skywire and did channle surchtwo times i only get 3 channles why

First, I'm not a Skywire Tech.
* Interesting question. I'm an "Old School" electronics tech (retired) so I checked out this 'Newfangled' TV antenna.
* So are we bringing back the old 'rabbit ears'? Looks like it. But there is a big problem; Who is still broadcasting "over the air"? Here in Hawaii they stopped "Air" transmissions decades ago. They still use it as a back up in the event of a Hurricane or other Cable/Telephone wire failure. But most TV's are digital now and do not pick up analog channels.
* This year all my analog TV's stopped working as Oceanic was bought out by Spectrum. They came around searching out "loose transmissions" from homes with broken or unhooked cables. Unhooked or old TV cables will broadcast a weak TV signal that a nearby neighbor can pick up using an "Air" antenna hook up to a TV. So by "listening" for these Cable signals the neighbor can watch the same channels. (depending if they cable owner has an active account.)
* in a crowded area like a city with lots of buildings. It's probable there are lots of old cable connections that have been cut. Smaller towns may be spread out too far to catch your neighbor's cable signals.
* Spectrum did an area wide sweep checking for these "stray" signals and installed filters on to our cable line and everyone else that was inadvertently "broadcasting".
* I found some reviews from consumer reports and others that may help you understand the question.
* FYI; Elon Musk is sending up "Free World wide WiFi" system into orbit within the next 5-10 years. So you may see cable and Internet channels go the way of "Radio" (you still get car radio stations free, right?) Ahh, I remember our first TV in 1959. Only had one B&W station at the time. And it was free!

What do ineed to watch this tv now that we have digital services

Yes you do. Not only do you need a convertor box but an antenna to connect to the convertor box. The convertor box will have to be plugged in and depending on the antenna it might have to be plugged in. This tv does allow and external antenna to be connected to it. This is where you will attach the convertor box with whatever adaptor you may need. The tv will need to remain on channel 3 at all times.

Would like to record from my tv to my magnavox dvd/vcr combo box

If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. If you have more question please contact me.

On the converter box that we hooked up we are geting every channel except 5-1 5-2

Any -1, -2 channles considered as a off-air antenna channels. I assume you have the off-air antenna and good reception on it. So make sure your off air antenna hooked up to your receiver.

If everything is hooked up right and your reception on antenna is good, try to trace the line for your antenna. may find any visual problems such as loosen up, dog chewed the cable etc :D

Last thing if you don't find solution by yourself is call your service provider for service call.

Good luck

Convertor box and Sony Wega with PIP (2 Tuners) and new Digital DVR/VCR

I wonder if the RF interference from the digital tuner. That box will only allow ouput either through the coax or the AV ports. If you do both you will not get a picture.

If you switch them you have to tell the box what your using for output by going through the setup process.

Is the Zenith 901 converter box for your cable TV.
