Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Tub fills but will not drain

I have an old Kenmore top load. The main control knob is in the center of the back raised area of the machine. You can pull the knob up to turn off the machine. The cylces are fine until it is time to drain and then it just stops. The tub is now half full of water and will not drain.

It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

My washer just fills....... Keeps filling all the way to the top, I had to manually move it to spin to drain. Worse part is, it was set for small load....... Why??????

sounds like you have a bad pressure switch usually located in the console area... it has a hose running from the side of the tub to the pressure switch and actually closes on pressure and will advance the timer ...check that and make sure your load size knob is working correctly as well...it isi going to be one of the 2 items..... good luck to you...

I have an old Kenmore Series 70 washer probably a '93 according to the metal tag inside at the back, looking at the tub... My problem is I don't know how to raise the top up to look at resecuring what I...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Next, see the following for how to release the console and remove the cabinet.

Kenmore 80 Series Overflow

We've now had this happen three times and the exact same thing caused it all three times.

If the water level selector knob hasn't "clicked" into one of the given load levels on the control panel(i.e. the knob is in between levels) it will continue to fill until you discover water everywhere and turn the knob until it "clicks" into a level.

As far as I know, it has nothing to do with loose hoses or bad switches, it's bad design. There seems to be no safety mechanism to turn off the water if you over- or under-shoot the desired water level.

Raise the drain hose and or repair the air gap where the drain hose enters the drain line.

No spinning or agitating

If it has a mechanical timer switch, (the main control knob) that is possibly the culprit. The timer switch is basically the "brain" of this type of washer. I had this problem on a washer.

That means that eithere the membrane water lever switch is faulty (most common) or that the drain pump solenoid is stuck on open.
