Question about Dell 3100MP Multimedia Projector

1 Answer

Dell 3100MP just powers off

I have a Dell 3100MP that will randomly power off while in use. Sometimes it's right after I turn it on, other times it's an hour plus into my presentation.

The only way I have found to resolve it is to unplug it from the power strip and plug it back in. Sometimes I even have to put it in a different slot on the power strip. The PC is plugged into the same strip, yet never goes down.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for the fast reply. I used a can of compressed air and blew out the fans, but they were really clean already, and no dust came out while I cleaned.

The PC is on the floor and the projector is on top of the table, so the heat from the PC should not effect it. The unit is very warm, I'd say hot. Though I know this is common on these devices. I powered it up and it shut off less than 5 mins after I started using it. I tried turning it back on using the power button, but nothing happened. I had to pull the power from the surge bar and plug it back in (same socket) and it then fired back up.

Do you think there is any chance that a going bad bulb could be the cause? Or is more likely that the unit is 5+ yrs old and just getting worn out? That really would not surprise me. As hot as it gets, then cooling down.. repeatedly that just kills electronics.

Dell has suggested that I have a hardware problem with the Projector. and they suggest that I call it in for repair.

TV Turns Off Automatically While Watching

Stop trying to turn on the set. You are causing more damage. The hissing sound you are hearing is either a High Voltage Transformer on the SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) indicating a short somewhere in the set or some capicitors that have shorted out. Also there can be a CRT that is leaking cooling fluid onto the Main bd or the Power/Deflection bd or both bds. Have a trained Samsung tech troubleshoot the set.

If you can take the unit apart, check the LVDS cable from the mother board to the Formatter/T-con assy. a good cleaning with alcohol should work.

Make sure you have the right input source selected. It may be looking for a signal from some input other than the one you're connected to. Beyond that, if it truly isn't seeing the input then you'll need to have the projector serviced.

Random shutdown

The power supply would have been my 2nd option too. It can build up quite a bit of dust which gets very hot inside and overheats. Good thing power supplies are cheap. I assume since you cleaned the heatsink area that your fan is working and plugged in. A bigger fan might be needed too.
