HI, the optical lens assembly has failed in your unit. you will need to replace this failed assembly in order to restore the reading capabilities of this gaming console.

there is one alternative solution but, it is not certain that is will fix this issue. you can try to use a lens cleaner to revive the assembly. Make sure it isn't a brush type. the brush type will misaligned the lens. this may work.

In most case, the spin motor will fail along with the optical assembly. make sure the CD will spin when loaded,if not, this method will not work and, replacement of the optical assembly will be the only fesible option.

The lens cleaning disc would be the better option but, you could disassemble the unit and gently run a small Q-Tip across the lens i suppose. this is crude but, it may work.

You can only purchase the optical lens replacement kit on line. they are not available in retail stores. you can purchase a cleaning disk at your local wal-mart. they are quite cheap.

When initiating the Q-Tip cleaning, you will need to extract the assembly. this is done with a set of precision tools. if you don't have a set of these particular tools, it will be hard to extract the assembly to preform the cleaning. the disk is the better option here.

It is possible to use a long slender build Q-Tip to slid in for the cleaning but, its kind of a hit and miss situation when trying it this way. you could do more damaged to the assembly when attempting it this way.

I'd say, its a 50/50 chance of this actually fixing the issue, considering the information that was stated in your original post above. I suspect total assembly failure and, this includes the actual spin motor as well.

    Its worth a try.

PS2 HELP stuck on browser config BUT reads a disc BUT wont actualy let me play it...

PS2 has a special laser that reads DVD or CD media differently. It can be "bad" in a way that some work and others don't. Cost of laser replacement is too high, buy a cheap core unit and game on.

Playstation 2 won't play DVDs

if it's a fat PS2 and
model SCPH 30001, SCPH 35001
(not including the models with an 'R' after the model #.

these models need the following to play DVDs:
- PS2 DVD remote with IR unit
- PS2 DVD disc player (sold with DVD remote w/ IR unit)
- PS2 memory card

you copied the DVD disc to the memory card. you used the memory card to play DVDs.

later models didn't need the memory card to play DVDs.

hope this helps :D

Disc read error

Disc Read Error generally means that the game disk cannot be read by your console.

Reasons for Disc Read Error
1. Disk surface scratched or smudged.
2. Disk surface dirty.
3. Lens surface dirty.

Here is what you can try doing.

1. Check the game disc for any scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth.

2. If the PS2 console is lying down, please set the console to on its side or if it's on its side set it to flat position, restart the console and then try game again. Always ensure the PlayStation 2 is in a cool, well ventilated place.

3. Remove and reinsert the Memory card of your PS2, restart the console then try running the game again.

Other troubleshooting that you can try.

Change the Disc speed of the PS2 DVD and then try again.

Start the PS2 with no disc in a drive. Press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Use the up and down buttons on the controller to select "Playstation Driver” and press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Select Disc speed. If it is set to "Fast," select "Standard"; if it is set to "Standard", select "Fast" and press the "X" button on the controller. Press the "O" button on the controller. Insert the game disc and restart the PS2. Try running the game again.

Turn the Diagnosis On for PlayStation2 to auto detect the best settings.

From the Browser and System Configuration menu. Press the triangle button to select Version. Highlight the Console from the list and press the triangle button - this accesses the next menu option. The Diagnosis will be highlighted. Press the X button to access the options available. Highlight "ON" and press the X button to affect the change. Restart the console and try the game again.

If the above steps does do not solve the error then you would probably have to replace the disc.

Note: If you are using the Slim version of PS2 make sure that the console is properly ventilated and that it should always be in the standing position, as the slim version of PS2 no fan or any other cooling unit unlike the normal PS2.

Ps2 not reading disc.

First you need to define what it IS and IS NOT reading. You'll need to run some tests.

Test 1: use a regular music CD (NON BURNED) (RETAIL) disk and put that into your ps2 and see if it starts playing it.

Test 2: insert a regular DVD (NON BURNED) (RETAIL) disk and try to play that.

If neither will play then it is one of two things. Your laser lens is out of alignment, or your laser lens is damaged.

If one plays but not the other, it is the potentiometer pots on the back of the PS2 lens that need adjusting. You can read more about that on one of my other posts ::.HERE.::

Playstation 2 Disc Read Error

After extensive research on this subject and working on several Playstation II systems. I found out the reason your system will play only blue disks and not silver is a alignment problem with the laser. It could be tilted or set to high or low. The quickest solution is to call Sony and get a new laser with the shuttle. If i am not mistaken it cost 50.00 and just go to the playstation site select support and it will explain in full detail how to take your system apart and replace the laser and shuttle.
