You need to start up from the system cd for the eMac then use 'Password Utility' to change the password.
Alternatively, if you are transferring the files to another Mac, you can start up the eMac in 'Target Disk' mode by holding down the 'T' key during start-up until a Firewire symbol appears on the screen. The computer can then be connected to another Mac which will see the eMac as an external HD.

Forgot user password

Hi I'm Peter , You can change your user password by going in with your administrator password. Here are a few helps https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid and see
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274 and

and Kappys answer
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4251616?start=0&tstart=0

In OS X Lion or later, you can reset your user password with your Apple ID.

In Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier, follow these steps to reset a password when there is only one administrator account on the computer, or if the original administrator account needs a password reset. "Original" administrator account refers to the one that was created immediately after installing Mac OS X. If the original administrator password is known, that administrator account may be used to reset the passwords of other administrator accounts using the steps described above. These steps require an optical drive; if your Mac does not have an optical drive and you have a Mac OS X v10.6 Install disc, see below.

  1. Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
  2. Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
  3. Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.

Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.

    Note
: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
  4. Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
  5. Select the user name of your original administrator account.

Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

  6. Hope this helps.

Forgot user password and cat log in.... i have a bunch of information on my computer and cant afford to lose it due to i never backed it up

If the computer have another account which have administrator privilege, you can use the account to help resetting your password.

But if not, you can refer to the article below to reset the password

http://www.appgeeker.com/guide/reset-windows-7-password.html

After that, you'd better to create a password reset disk to avoid a problem like this in the future.

I bought a eMac from the dep of Education and I am unable to get into it because i don't have the username or password

You should format the internal hard disk and install a clean and fresh version of Mac-OS anyways and create a new user-account. If there is no install-disc included, try calling Apple, tell them your eMac's serial number (All eMac's have their serial numbers printed inside the disc drive door), and ask them if they have any replacement install discs for your model of eMac. Check out the Apple eMac support page or the Apple eMac support forum for more informations.

I have an old school pc it is an emac and need an password for it can you break it

In OS X, if you're the administrative (or only) user, you can reset the admin/user password using the OS X installation disk #1. Put the disk in the CD drive & restart the eMac while holding the "C" key down (Restart is also on the Apple menu, top-left corner of your screen). When the Installer opens, click "Utilities" then Restart. When the Installer asks you what language, pick one (maybe English?) 8¬), click continue (arrow) then Utilities again & choose "Reset Password"; the system will guide you through the steps. Once you've reset the user password, restart the eMac, then you can log in using the new password. You'll probably want to reset your "Keychain" password to match your new login password – otherwise it'll ask for your password every time it needs one for a program. "Keychain Access" is in the 'Utilities' folder, which is inside the 'Applications' folder.

—> Important: if the old Users Home Folder was encrypted ("FileVault" protected), you'll need the old user's password, or the eMac's Master password to access the files in the Home Folder – otherwise, the Home folder's files will be lost. As a new user, you'll have your own Home Folder & access to all application programs.

Changing Root/Administrator password for eMac G4...

Strong Warning: You should only enable root if you really really need it, really know what it's for, and realize the security implications of enabling root! You can do everything you need to do with "su do", so root is really not needed ... with that said, here's how to enable it - please understand what you're doing and why before you do this!

The "root" user (also known as the superuser) is the most powerful UNIX account. The root account can do anything to any file or folder, anywhere on the system. For that reason, it's considered quite dangerous, and only needs to be used (occasionally) by advanced users.

Because of the dangers of operating as root, Apple has chosen to hide the root account in OS X Final. However, there are a number of ways to enable it. The easiest is to boot off the install CD, and look under the Install menu for the "Password Reset" option. You can use this to change your own password if you forget it, and to enable the root account. This utility will not run if you copy it to your hard drive! It only works when booting from the CD.

Multiple users

Yes you need to start off the install disk, star off the install disk and it will come up to the installer window, depending on the version of OS X the menus will be different. Installer for 10.1-103 and Utilities for 10.4-10.5, select the Reset Password function and you will see a picture of your hard drive, select it and a list of users will appear and you can then reset their passwords.
