SOURCE: image is grany every time tv is cold.

I had the same problem. Except mine never got better after the tv warmed up. I fortunately I still have my manufacturers warranty and Samsung sent a guy out within a few days. He replaced a few parts which really didn't do anything. However what he did that was interesting was on two circuit boards. One on the mid left and the other on the mid right. Apparently there is a nob or something he tweaked on each panel that cleared the grainy image right up. What he told me was that the it is basically pixels that are not turning off in sync. adjusting the two circuit boards syncs the pixels to turn on and off at the same time.

SOURCE: Samsung LCD TV Image Retention...I Think

Sounds like a defective set. I have the same TV and don't have this problem. It's a long shot, but one thing you could try is turning on "Game Mode" which is designed for fast moving action.

Picture is shaking during live events

If its just live events, I'm going to assume its your cable/satellite provider. If you watch blu-ray, DVDs and it doesn't shake your TV is fine.

The first step is to determine whether it's the LCD display, the image or the video feed from your cable or satellite provider. Make sure all your connections are secure and not
To test the LCD display, open your menu options to see if that shakes. If it doesn't then it's not a hardware problem and your TV is fine.

If your menu does shake, unplug everything from the TV. You will need to test if you have possible inference from other devices. One by one plug your devices in and view the menu for it to start shaking. This is one possible solution to the shaky image.

Again, other possible solution is your cable or satellite providers feed is shaky. You need to call them and inform them of the issue. A replacement receiver could solve the issue.

The screen on my tv has two slightly discoloured vertical bars

Sounds like image retention. Is it an older Plasma TV?
Image retention is when an image left is left on for a while actually "burns" into the image. It would be especially noticeable in BluRay because it is a bright image. The burn in was probably cause by watching Cable in 4:3. Try to find a static white image to display over night that should remove the burn in.

The image expands off the screen of my HD tv

Look in the menu for an image adjustment option. This is used to center or adjust the given image. Try a different type of connectiong from the cable box to your TV. ie; if you are connected by component connection, try AV or HDMI to test. If that doesn't work, look at the cable box settings (call your cable company for instructions) or have the box replaced if defective.

This is common for PC connections but not for cable.

Whats wrong with my viewfinder?

I don't have my camera with me, so I may be off on the exact placement, and I hope I'm not telling you something you already know and the problem is worse, but on the left side of the viewfinder itself is a tiny dial that adjusts the focus. Just look the the viewfinder and play with the dial to adjust to your eyesight.
