If the display is too light or too dark, you should adjust the contrast of the display.
Press either review button until NO CALL or the number of calls displays. Press and hold the READ button approximately 5 seconds until the display reads CONTRAST followed by a number. Release the READ button and use the review up and review down buttons to change the contrast number. When you are finished, press READ again.
First, try adjusting the display contrast. Press SHIFT MODE down-arrow 6 then use the left/right-arrows to change the contrast. If that doesn't do any good, try replacing the battery. Contrast adjustment is on page E-5 and the battery replacement instructions start on page E-71 of the manual.
It is possible that the calculator went dead because the main batteries were depleted. However when you change the main batteries, it is often the case that the display contrast changes, and may become too light for you to see anything. If that is the case, you can increase the contrast of the screen. Press the [2nd] key and release it. Press and HOLD the [UpArrow]. The contrast should increase and the screen darkens. Keep pressing the UpArrow until the display is satisfactory to you.
The Hp 10s doesn't have contrast control. You probably need to change the button cell battery LR44. This battery only last 3 years, if your lucky under normal use. No telling how long it sat in a warehouse or, on the shelf. If replacing the battery does not work then you may have a defective screen. HP should replace it, if you had it less than a year of purchase date. If you have any more questions about this calculator just post a comment about your inquiry and, I'll be glad to respond.
Hi, It has two batteries CR2032. They should not be removed at the same time. There must always be one battery in the calculator. The calculator should be turned OFF when changing batteries.
Often after you change batteries the screen contrast may be too light and you cannot see anything. The contrast can be adjusted (lightened or darkened). As you adjust the contrast setting,a highlighted number in the upper right corner changes to indicate the current contrast setting; 0 is the lightest, and 9 is the darkest. To adjust the display contrast: 1. Press and release the [2nd] key. 2. Use one of two keys: (UpArrow or DownArrow) --- To increase the contrast (darken), press and hold [UpArrow] ---To decrease the contrast (lighten), press and hold DownArrow
