I have a 2004 Pontiac aztek that started to make a real high pitched squeeling noise a few days ago. It has a couple of different things that happen with it, so I'm going to try to put them in order of which they started happening. We went down a muddy road one day and it seemed as if mud got up onto something and it started making this real high pitched squeeling noise under the hood, it appears to be coming from the driver side somewhere. we looked, it looked as if something, a wire or something, was smoking. don't know if it was just due to the water hitting heat or what, or if it would be related to this. It quit after sitting a few and we went a while with no issues. I came home from work the other day and it stared doing it again as soon as I pulled into my driveway. I parked the car and turned off the engine. I then went to turn it back on to see if it would still do it, and once I clicked the key over to just run the battery, it caught and started the engine up, as if it turned all the way on by itself. it did that a few times then it would let me turn it the first couple of clicks at a time to run the battery, then the dash lights etc until u finally turn the key over to start the engine. it sat the day and didn't do it again for a few days. Now it's doing it quite often. it did it some yesterday when we were out and about, but not too much. And today when we were trying to go out and about it started again. it seems to happen when we're going up or downhill, seems to be when it starts and when it starts we can't get it to stop unless we hit the brakes a bit or turn the engine off for a few. it did it once today where you cant click the key over without it catching on its own and starting. we let it sit and it quit doing that.. but still would squeal whenever we would move a couple of feet. It will idle fine with no issue, as soon as we start to drive is when it starts to happen and will continue even after putting it into park up until we turn the engine off. Once and a while after it starts and you go to turn the engine on immediately afterwards, it will squeal as soon as you start it, but most of the time it will be fine UNTIL you put it in park or begin to drive. When it is doing it, or when it starts to do it, it will mess with the electrical inside of the car. The radio will kick off and back on, and the dash lights will go out. it seems as if the car is loosing power and will feel like it wants to start to chug a bit. You can lessen it by pressing the brake but as soon as you let off of the brake it will start again. It is so loud though and sounds so horrible that I will just stop wherever and turn the car off. I don't know what the heck this may be, and I need to get it fixed. I don't know if it is something we may be able to fix ourselves or if it will be something a mechanic will have to do. But I also don't know what to tell a mechanic may be the issue. So I'm hoping someone here may be able to give us some idea of what it may be and we can go talk to a mechanic on Monday about it and have some idea of what may be going on. After all that I would be looking at the alternator for the problem. Check the drive belt for condition and tension .. The self starting could be mud across the starter solenoid terminals . The sound may be mud and rocks stuck behind a pulley . There are so many faults recorded that maybe you should wash down underneath and the engine forts before going to an accredited workshop and be wary of any excessive quotes .

You appear to have what is known as a dry joint in the armature commutator bars . When that bar stops under a brush the current is prevented from turning the armature as there is a degration of the circuit. . Repeated clicking of the key eventually gets the armature to move enough to allow the brush to touch on another bar and so the car starts .. It is repairable in an accredited auto electrician shop but be careful of the cost as you will need new brushes and it may get beyond the price of a new starter. Second hand starters from a wreckers if you are sure that they come out of a relatively new engine would be ok but a new starter comes with a warranty . It is your choice . Make sure that all the terminals are shiny clean and tight all the way to the starter as well before you decide
