Re: Video Card up grade

Actual video card upgrades for laptops are very rare and unlikely in most laptops out there unless we look to high-end gaming systems from companies such as Alienware. (The first company to incorporate upgradeable video card systems in their laptops.)

I do not believe that you can upgrade the graphics system in your model of laptop. I have reviewed all documentation on HP's website for your model and there is no evidence of any possible upgrades for the video system.

The closest I came to any information relevant to the video system was how to replace it. (They're refering to the LCD screen, however.)

Here is the link to the PDF document containing this information. (This is a document meant primarily for technicians.)

Scroll down to Adobe Acrobat Reader page 128 of the document. You will find section 5.12 ("5.12 Display Assembly") on the page labeled "5-28". This is the section that covers maintenance or replacement of the display system.

The only possible upgrade for the video system would be to increase the amount of memory you are sharing to the video system (often called "frame buffer") through the BIOS settings. If it is possible, increase that number for more texture memory.

But if you do not have much memory to begin with, I would recommend increasing the amount of memory in your system before increasing the frame buffer for your video.

If you are not sure on how to do that, consult the same document for detailed instructions.

Good luck.

Blue vertical line in my screen

If that is all you have it sounds like an LCD failure. Laptops can be plugged into an external monitor. Try that to see if you have a video card failure.

Lcd lights got dimmer

First check to make sure the power adapter is connected to the laptop properly, if not it runs off the battery and the display is dimmer.
Second check the brightness setting, you can adjust the brightness by pressing the Fn key plus the F7 or F8 keys to adjust the brightness.

If this doesn't work then :-
The problem/fault could be one of several things. Could be the CCFL lamp, the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or the video card.
The video card cannot be replaced on a laptop, it is part of the motherboard.
To determine if the video card is faulty, connect an external monitor to the external video port on the laptop, power up the monitor first and then the laptop. The video output will switch automatically to the external monitor, if you see a normal Windows image then the video card is OK.
Next, shut down the laptop, disconnect the monitor and power up the laptop. After the laptop boots up look at the LCD screen at a sharp angle and if you see a dim or dark image then the fault is a faulty CCFL lamp or inverter. Most likely the CCFL lamp is faulty, but the inverter is easier to replace.

Cant See Post

The 2 beeps are an error code. It can mean a couple of things; 1. Bad or improperly seated RAM; or 2. Bad or improperly seated video card. The F2 option will take you into bios setup. But I would try the video card option first as it is the usual culprit in this situation. Hope this helps & please rate this solution fixya. Thanks.

Line in lcd

Most of the time, symptoms like those appearing on your laptop are caused by problems with your video card or the LCD screen. One of the main causes for the problem is excessive heat buildup in the laptop that damages either component, or both of them. If you have a jack for connecting an exterior monitor, try hooking up a monitor to the laptop. If the problematic lines don't show up on your LCD, that;s the component that's going bad, If they are still visible, there's a good chance your video card is going bad (or both the video card and LCD screen are going bad).

Hope that helps isolate your problem.

Two vertical lines on my compaq presario (M2000) laptop

Well, since the line disappear when the screen saver comes on, I"m led to believe that all the hardware side of the equation is OK. To put it simply, if there was a malfunction in the video (chances are) it would affect that too.

I would update (most likely available as nobody usually does this) the firmware for your video card. So identify the card EXACTLY, from documentation, or from the build list on the manuf. website, goto the manufacturer, say, ATI, and find the firmware there, where you will also find instructions to install it.

Then, just to be sure, I would update the video driver for Windows, in a similar manner to the instructions above.

If, despite all the above you still have a problem, then its time to get the computer serviced.

Good luck,
