There is a starter solenoid located on the right inner fender well. If you bypass this by jumping from battery voltage to starter lead on solenoid and starter engages then the solenoid is bad . common problem

1965 mustang starter fires but won't engage flywheel. it is a brand new starter

Doesn't matter. The forks inside the starter may be missing or broke off or bad spring in starter that pushes the gear out. Try new started. Starter may have to be shimmed to make contact with flywheel. Starter may be kicking out but not engaging flywheel.

I have a92 ford explorer and the starter will not engage tok it off and checked it and it works good but when i put it back on it will not engage

Yeah, you have no resistance against the starter drive gear when you have it out of the car.If the starter has a solenoid atop the starter, is the gear flying outward on the shaft into the engage position?
Even if it is,you could still have a bad drive.
Like IronFist says,if the starter is pretty old, why not replace it? don-ohio

Where is starter solenoid 2002 ford f-250

The starter solenoid is mounted directly to the starter motor on all late model Ford trucks. Older Ford trucks had a main and a sub solenoid, the main was on the inside of fender near the battery, the Red Positive cable went to the main starter solenoid then down to the sub solenoid, earlier Fords only had the main and a centrifugal drive starter engagement clutch.. In plain English this means when the starter spun up the starter drive hear was thrown out to engage the flywheel.

Starter staying engaged 94 150 ford pickup 300 6cylinder

Solenoid contacts are stuck in contact, not releasing and keeping current on the starter motor in the engaged position. Try turning off the engine, and tapping the starter motor soleniod with a piece of wood or soft hammer.
