Well honestly I hope you're somewhat mechanical inclined...jack up car, remove right front wheel, remove inner wheel well, remove coolant overflow bottle, remove belt, remove harmonic balancer from crank, this allows access to remove pump, support front chassis with jacks,2, remove both front and rear chassis bolts, remove engine mount bolts, now the fun part, you have to jack body up SLOWLY, until you have room to remove pump from underneath the vehicle.if you have an engine cradle that would work out best.problem with this vehicle is there's no room, which im sure you already know.labor time for a shop to fo it is around 3 hrs plus can be done by D.I.Y but be careful and take your time. .im sure someone may chime in with an easier way, im just going by the book...good luck

Do you need to replace the timing belt when you change a water pump for a 1998 mercury mystique v6?

You don't have to replace it but you have to take the belt off to remove the water pump for the extra $30.00 i would recomend changing the belt too, unless the belt has been changed less then 20,000 miles ago .

Replacing the belt tensioner and serpentine belt in a 1999 mercury mystique but the belt is still loose how do I get it to tighten

You either have the wrong belt, or it's not on correctly. Make sure all of the pulleys are secure. (Like the power steering pump support bracket isn't loose) The diagram for the belt is usually under the hood.

Smelled mild burning, lost antifreeze - engine temp Hot. I looked under car and noticed a serverly frayed Belt - NOT the big surpentine belt - another small belt on the driver's side. 1999 Mercury Mystique...

For the 1999 Mercury Mystique Water Pump Belt on 2.5L V6 Engine:

Probable Causes: Belt: worn out, started slipping. Overheating caused by failure of Belt. Lost antifreeze: caused by failure of belt, not turning Water Pump Pulley, not circulating anitfreeze, which resulted in overheating.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Serpentine & Drive Belt Diagrams and Tensioners for your 2.5L Engine.
Scroll down the Page (about 1/3rd down) to Diagram #G99H08189, it shows the specific Water Pump Belt.
Note the Tensioner.
