Don't need THE boot disks.
A system disk from any OS will do.
Insert disk before power on.
It should tell you whether it is compatible.
If so it will load its own drivers.
and if not it may tell you what OS is on there.
ps. OS = operating system

SOURCE: Acer Aspire One has Hard drive Password frozen

There should not be a password set in the BIOS unless you set it up with one. You can clear the BIOS to BRAND NEW state. Acer can guide you through this if it is under warranty. If it is not, write back and I will help you do this.

Problem with Western Digital 1.0TB WD10EALX hard drive.

Having looked at the dock, if it's not appearing in the windows disk management I'm afraid you'll have to try another i/o method to test whether the drive is ok. The easiest option is to find someone with a computer which has a spare sata slot and partition it with that (assuming it sees it) or try a different device like a sata to usb converter. Alternatively you could make a linux or other bootable usb stick with formatting/partitioning utility and put the drive in your laptop, boot from the stick and partition it that way. I don't think there are any user settings in the dock you have and no jumpers on the drive so you're scuppered. Let us know how you get on?
Of course having partitioned it it might just not be compatible with your dock, although
Just one more thing if you haven't, try connecting the power to the dock before you plug it into the laptop and try each of your usb ports

Transfer stuff from a working and put it on another hard drive

The easiest way is to connect your hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter or USB hard drive dock, then plug this USB adapter ot dock into the USB port of your computer. The computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the various folders and copy the folders or files to the computer,
If you want to copy these folders or files to another hard disk then connect the other hard drive to the USB hard drive adapter or USB hard drive dock and plug it into your computer and copy the folders or files from your computer to the external hard drive.

I want to turn a memory stick into hard drive. How can i do that?

you will need usb data drive at least 4 - 8 gb

Download the GParted Live utility and the HP USB Format Tool via the links in Resources.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5757&file=15&evp=fb0a8fee133295405b5af3205e8d2424

Insert your USB stick into the computer. Run HP USB Format Tool. Select your USB stick and then choose the FAT or FAT32 format options. Click "Start."

Extract the files from the GParted Live zip file. Select the USB stick as the destination.

Open a file browser and navigate to the USB stick. Select "utils" > "win32" > "makeboot.bat." Double click on "makeboot.bat." Enter "Y" when prompted.

Power off your computer leaving the USB stick inserted.

Connect your portable hard drive to another USB port.

Power on the computer and quickly press "F8" through "F12" to access your boot menu.

Check your computer or motherboard manual for the exact keystroke.

Select the USB stick as your boot source and press "Enter." Allow the Gparted GUI to start.

Select the external portable hard disk drive. Click "Partition" on the menu bar.

Hover over "Format to" and select "NTSF."

If you are unable to create or format the partition, select delete partition.

This will erase all data on the external hard drive. Confirm partition deletion. Select the external drive again. Click "Partition" and hover over "Format to" then select "NTSF."

Select the external hard disk drive again. Click "Partition" on the menu bar and then "Manage Flags." Check the box next to "Boot." Save and apply changes to the drive.

Power off your computer and remove the USB stick.

Install the OS

Insert or plug your OS installer, usually a DVD, CD or USB thumb drive, into the computer. Power on the computer and access the boot manager again.

Select the source containing your OS installer and press "Enter."

Enter your personalization and registration information if required.

When prompted, specify the portable hard drive as the install directory.

Begin the installation normally.

Restart the computer when prompted and access the boot menu again. Select the external hard drive as your boot source and press "Enter" to ensure the installation succeeded.

Use this process to boot from your portable drive on any computer.

hope this helps

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio model SR150FN and I want to install a new TOSHIBA 500GB HD model MK5076GSX, the problem is that the BIOS can't see it, I put the HD in an external usb case, created a 500 GB...

> put HD into an external USB case
> the BIOS cannot see it

Correct. The BIOS does not see "external" USB devices.

However, see if you can "enable boot from USB devices",
and change the "boot order" to include USB devices.

You may need to remove the old disk-drive, and install the new disk-drive in its place.
Then, put the old disk-drive into the external USB case.
Install Windows to the new disk-drive, and then connect the external USB case,
and copy all the files from the "old" disk-drive to the "new" disk-drive.

Unable to install OS on Hard drive. Error PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable. PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM. Invalid partition table

When your computer failed to boot from the disk-drive, it tried to connect to a network-accessible "boot-server" via the Ethernet adapter.

However, if there's no cable connected to the computer's Ethernet port, you will get the "check the cable" error-message.

So, your real problem is "invalid partition table", which means that the very first record on the disk-drive is either missing or corrupt.
That first record contains the "partition table", which lists the size of the hard-drive, and the size of each partition (usually only one) on the hard-drive.

So, you'll need to buy an adapter that has a USB-plug on one end, and a connector for your "SATA" or "IDE" hard-drive at the other end.

Remove the hard-drive from your computer, attach it to the connector, and plug-in the USB connector to a USB port on another computer, and then use software to delete and then reconstruct the partition table.

Or, the hard-drive is failing, and must be replaced (maybe under warranty???).

Boot from external HDD

Hello, it depends on your computer if it can boot from USB. then you can install it on a usb external drive but I dont recomend it. your computer gonna be very slow to start and use. I suggest that you buy a new DISK, they are not so expensive. if you use your external harddrive as your windows partition you just gonna be pissed off when its running so slow.

Cant install xp to dell c400 with external cd-rom

This is how I did it, you may or may not have the ability. A basic knowledge of Dos is necessary 1) I used another laptop but you could use an adapter to use the hard drive in a regular computer. 2)boot with a windows 98 boot disk, fdisk it to a fat32 partition, make the hard drive a system boot disk (format /s c:) 3) copy the i386 folder and all its contents from a full or full oem (not branded) disk to the laptop drive, also copy smartdrv and highmem.sys from the floppy (speeds thing up dramatically) and create a config.sys file with device=highmem.sys 4)physically install the hard drive back into the C400, boot to dos run smartdrv.exe, then go to the i386 folder and type winnt.exe (enter) wooo should work.
