SOURCE: Function Buttons are not working in conjunction with (FN) Key for Screen light adjustment and other features.

As far I know FN keys are related with specific motherboard drivers.
Thoshiba recovery cd/dvd during restore/re-install, loads all toshiba drivers and utilities for operating fn keys.
If the operative system loaded in the laptop is no OEM then you will have this problem, and in order to fix it you must:
First install the operative system (clean install)
Second install: chipset drivers. This drivers instructs the operative system how to detect specific hardware. Must be installed in first order.
Third: install drivers (ethernet card, audio, video controller, toshiba utilities, etc). At this point verify all FN keys ( check display settings, stand by/ hybernation, etc).
four: Load all software needed (microsoft office, etc).

I hope this help to solve your problem

SOURCE: toshiba satellite fn key display problem

Just download this :) It will fix your problem. If it doesn't work, just search for Toshiba Value Added Package Vista/XP (that depends on what Operative System you've got) and download for your Operative System.

SOURCE: Toshiba function key display problems

I had the same exact problem. The only thing I found so far is to close the process that controls the function keys. If you hit ctrl+shift+esc and go to the processes tab you can find it. It was called "TRDmain.exe" or something close to that. I literally just discovered this so sorry I don't have a better answer.

Also note that your function keys will stop working after this, though I'm sure restarting your computer would bring back their functionality.

I have a Toshiba satellite L755-s5153 when I turn it on it says "windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem:" but I don't have the original disk...

Starting Windows 7 in Safe Mode is an excellent next step when starting Windows normally is not possible. Safe Mode only starts the most important Windows 7 processes so, depending on the problem you're having, you might be able to troubleshoot or even fix the problem from here.
To begin entering Windows 7 Safe Mode, turn on or restart your PC.
Just before the Windows 7 splash screen shown above appears, press the F8 key to enterAdvanced Boot Options.

Next you can restore your system from a previous known working date from your restore function. If you are using Windows 7 you may follow these step to restore.

1. Start
2. Go to "All Programs"
3. Select "Accessories"
4. Select "System Tools"
5. Select "System Restore"

Do hope this helps.

My laptop display messed up after power surge

If it is out completely, try hitting your function key and one of the keys across the top, usually has a small screen/large screen icon. The function key to hit is the same color as the F-Key you are pressing, hold function key down, press proper F-key. IF still no picture, take out the battery and unplug. Wait an hour or so and plug in without the battery and try again.

I need an explanation as to the secondary function of the keys on my NB305. Mainly the top row of 'F' keys, but the remainder of the keyboard as well. What do all these little symbols on the keys mean?

F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. The function executed by individual keys depends on the software you are using.

1. Sound Mute: Pressing Fn + ESC in a windows environment turns sound on or off. Press Fn + Enter to simulate Enter or the enhanced keyboard's numeric keypad. 2. Instant security: Press Fn + F1 to blank the screen to prevent others from accessing your data. To restore the screen and original setting, press any key or press the Touch Pad. 3. Power save mode: Pressing Fn + F2 changes the power save mode. 4. Standby: When you press Fn + F3, the computer enters Standby. 5. Hibernation: When you press Fn + F4, the computer enters Hibernation. 6. Display selection: Press Fn + F5 to change the active display device. Hold down Fn and press F5 again to change the device. 7. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness in decrements. 8. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F7 increases the display brightness in increments. 9. Wireless setting: If your computer has both Bluetooth and Wireless LAN functions, you can press Fn + F8 to select which type of wireless communication you want to use. 10. Touch Pad: Pressing Fn + F9 in a windows environment enables or disables the Touch Pad function. 11. Press Fn + F10 or Fn + F11 to access the integrated keypad. When activated, the keys with gray markings on the bottom edge become numeric keypad keys (Fn + F11) or cursor control keys (Fn + F10). The power on default for both settings is off. Press Fn + F12 (ScrLock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on default is off. 12. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (reduce): To reduce the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 1 key while holding down the Fn key. (13. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (enlarge): To enlarge the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 2 key while holding down the Fn key.

How do I replace the keyboard?

next to the F1 key and the windows key (2nd upper key and second to last key) are two screws, usually under some covering. unscrew and lift top edge of the keyboard towards the trackpad to lay face down. Undo the wire ribbon by lifting the grey or brown tabs and remove ribbon and keyboard. Then install the new keyboard by inserting the ribbon on the place. Lock down with the tabs and put the plastic prongs (close to the space bar) into the laptop body first, and then close keyboard onto the final position. screw back in and thats all. nboulikas@gmail.com for any additional questions.

Brand new Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5868 laptop display screen has gone black, even though the computer is on.

Since your laptop is brand new , you may not be familure with it's function keys , FN

Sometimes the users accidentaly presses the FN and the F5 monitor function key at the same time.
which effectively turns the notebooks display off.

D in the image below is the FN function key
and the monitor function key could be F5 , it will have a little monitor symbol on it.

When they are pressed together it will turn the notebooks display off and enable any VGA monitor connected to it's VGA ports. when pressed again , they will turn of the VGA port and turn on the notebooks display.
