Philips LS1400 - Boot Sector Virus switching itself off randomly

By jezza_hachi_ on Jun 19, 2009

" "
My Philips Freevents PC (running windows XP media Center edition) has recently shown a boot sector virus and switches itself off at random. I don't believe it to be an overheating issue as it sometimes does it as soon as windows has booted and other times 10-15 mins after being switched on.

I'm trying to figure out a way to remove the boot sector virus and hope the virus is related to my random power down issues.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

What anti virus do you have installed?
When did you last run a scan?"

Since I only just re-installed windows I haven't been able to re-install AVG with the time scale to run a scan. What Antivirus program would be recommended for this issue?

Clarification Request

Hi,
The master boot record can be cleaned and fixed by your antivirus software, if you are or were using any floppy's make sure you format them.

Have a look at this web page for full instruction on how to repair the MBR (master boot record) and follow the advice given.

Good luck

- First of all try running the in-built software that Microsoft provides for any malicious software.
Click on the start menu, select run and type in the box mrt.exe and hit enter, scan the computer for problems.

Antivir is also a good tool for this job, get the free version here >>>>>>>

Install it and try and run it, if it does not give you enough time to run it, boot the PC up in safe mode and run it.
