Gaggia unica will not prime

Same problem and I FIX it!
The problem was the flow meter (turbine) which can cause two problems:
  1. like your, poor water from steam.
  2. the machine always ask to prime
The first one is caused by limestone that blocks or partially blocks water entering the flow meter (it has a very small hole)
The second one by limestone that block the flow meter rotor
For both:
  1. Remove the flow meter block (with the whole Black block containing the pipe coming from water tank). You have to lift the black block from the back and pull.
  2. Separate the flow meter from the black block
  3. Disconnect the In and the Out pipes.
  4. When you have the flow meter in your hand (only the white piece), open it turning it's top (clockwise may be)
  5. Using a tooth brush clean well inside parts (top, base, red-rotor)
  6. Using a paper clip clean well both holes (in and out)
  7. Clean the o-ring
  8. When reassembling the flow meter pay attention to the o-ring between the top and the base which must be well fitted into it's seat before close it (if not, some air may come in the water circuit and the pump will not work).
The In and the Out pipes must be at 90 degrees when closed.
Before reconnect pipes, blow with your mouth into the In hole. You should hear the rotor rotating very well.
Hope this help

Initially when the unit said need to prime, no water would flow out of the steam unit. After pulling the pump out and cleaning it, not sure what was blocking water the steam unit now has water pressure,...

I fixed the same issue by pushing in the water knob "in" towards the machine. Machine than primes normally as the water flow is restored and it resets itself.

My machine displays "Need to Prime". I attempt to prime it but the message keeps reappearing. In other words is seems that it is unable to be primed in the usual fashion. Any advise would be...

Ventilate message

That means the pump needs to be primed by running water through the wand. Push the water button and open the knob on the right. You will hear the pump change tone when it primes and the light or message will disappear. If you have a restriction in the intake line the message will not go away. There is a flow meter inside the machine that measures water flow. If the flow meter does not spin when the pump is running, the computer thinks that the pump is not primed. Coffee grounds can get into the intake and restrict the flow meter. If you get a restriction in the water intake (below the water tank, on the machine) the pump may run and water comes out, but the flow meter does not create the jet of water to spin the turbine wheel to send impulses to the computer. You get the ventilate message. One thing to remember is when you are working on the water system (have the water tank off) do not fill the bean hopper and visa versa. Keep them covered when working on the other. Cross contamination will damage a machine fast
The first thing that I would check is the tip of the steam wand for a plug. If that is clear then I would suspect a clogged flow meter. If you can get the flow meter out it twists apart and don't loose the parts and the dot on the turbine goes up. Clean out the small opening on the bottom pipes where the hoses attach. Look inside and make sure that they are clear before reassembling.

Wont pump water

1. Suction strainer with checkvalve must be always
under water.
2. Check the suction checkvalve if holds water. Water
must remain steady when primed.
3. Open the priming port, and fill it full with water.
4. Close the flow control valve.
5. Switch the power on and start the pump.
6. Then, slowly open the flow control valve, to the
level such that it will not break suction, and
stabilized the water flow..
