I get a windows system error when trying to send design from computer to sewing machine

You need the USB Manager software to view the files. Have a look at all the software that were supplied with the machine. Load the embroidery software on your laptop and then open the USB manager.
When it opens it will show a light blue screen and grey icons to the left. Click in "disk", then click on "read disk" and you should be able to see your designs. The grey icons will turn orange were designs are stored, and the grey ones indicate empty space for more designs.
Enjoy your fantastic machine

The Designer 1 needs the design in an shv format in order to read it. The floppy disk for an older machine may be created using several different programs but the Husqvarna Viking module is known as Disk Manager. It is included with many of the HV software packages. With a newer USB Designer 1, the program is Disk Manager USB.

If you purchased the software after April 1st,2006 then you will be entitled to a free upgrade. If not you might have to purchase the software. Here is a link to the PFAFF software download page. http://www.pfaff.com/global/11283.html

3D was intended to be used on XP and also worked for some time on Vista with the proper manipulation of updates. I don't believe that it will work at all on Windows 7.
4D does work on both Vista and Windows 7. It does need the latest update for Windows 7.
