There should be nothing special about playing the different DVDs. Putting in a normal DVD compared to a BluRay should not require you to do anything different.
Look at the front of the DVD player and look for the BluRay logo. If you do not see it on the front of the DVD player then you do not have a BluRay player.
This is the first sign that the laser on your bluray drive is beginning to give trouble. Unfortunately this will progress until the unit fails to read any game or DVD.

down load it from the manufacture onto a flash drive. unzip/read directions if needed, remove all dvds from unit, plug the flash drive into the usb port, and follow the on screen promps. now you can watch all the "new" Blue Rays ( this works on 90% of the dvd players too If you don't have a usb port get the update that goes on a data dvd ...follow those instructions
the bluray laser is bad. The PS3 has two lasers – one to read
bluray, another to read DVDs. Games are in the bluray format… as well

If your PS3 is under warranty, send it in for repair. Describe the
issue, and they will give you an RMA. I once had my PS3 repaired and
back to me within the week.
