SOURCE: old baseboard heater smells like menthol

sorry, no solution. but. we recently moved into a 1940's apt. which has these older electric baseboard heaters and if we run them, they put off a menthol/chemical odor -- which sounds like the same thing you are experiencing (so will be very much interested in seeing if there is a solution).

if we either a) leave the heater running (even on low out in the living room) while we sleep or run it all day and don't air out the apartment, we both have serious achy joints the next morning and lots of stomach acid/irritation throughout the nite - also dry, red irritated eyes. apparently the cat has something going on as well -- he will get up throughout the night and walk thru the apt. yowling (not normal for him, only after we moved and started using the unit).

it took us a couple of weeks to identify what seemed to be causing the problem (the baseboard unit) and another week to do enough testing to determine that yep, you run that puppy, you're going to be real sorry that nite/next morning (and you won't sleep much because of the yowling cat). turn it off, no menthol/chemical smell. no yowling cat. no throat, stomach, eye irritation/gradoo, joint aches or sinus stuff going on that nite/next morning.

our solution? turn it off and leave it off. we're using a small metal cased ceramic disc heater instead (recommended on those multiple chemical sensitivity sights - figure if it's good enough for them it's good enough for us).

interesting info on EPA site re: appliances we don't think much about. one study re: air cleaners/ionizers, etc. - they did a random test of all kinds/price range/quality of air cleaners. they found **without exception** that all air cleaners/ionizers they tested put out "dangerous levels of chemicals" (their words). their recommendation, until further testing could be done is that if you want clean air... open a window.

it got me to thinking about this heater thing. and i wonder how many people are on medications for stomach issues (acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.), sleep problems, joint aches, etc. that are caused by the appliances we run in our homes for air control.

i'll leave you with one other statistic that may be related to all of this: according to the CDC, 67% of the u.s. adult population is on at least 4 medications. when you look at that, you wonder, ok how many of us are on at least 2 medications (85+%?).

doctors usually don't ask you about what kind of devices you are running in your house and whether you notice a pattern of symptom abatement when you turn them off. they just give you whatever it takes to mask your discomfort.

just a thought.

SOURCE: Electric Hydronic Baseboard Heater, 240 Volt: WHEN I TURNED ON MY ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEATER THER...

My PLF504 detonated this morning (11-25-2010). It worked fine for two years then BANG. Room was lit by flame coming from center (left to right) of unit. I wrote Marley asking them to honor the 10 year heater element warranty. Also, no burnt wires at thermostat connection, no dust bunnies on the fins. Source of fire was the fluid filled encapsulated heater core. Thank God, circuit breaker tripped and wall was tiled.

Hot watertank puts out high pitch sound

It is probably the water passing through some restriction such as a valve or maybe a T or 90. If this is correct changing the water flow will change the pitch and it will be absent when there is no water flow.

If that doesn't change or eliminate the high pitch sound I do not have a clue.

It may be the bearings in the motor are dry or out. You coulod pull the motor and fan assembly out and check its operation while it is out of the heater case. Look for anything inside the heater cavity where the motor sits for any problem hindering motor operation.

My electric baseboard heaters make a pinging sound which drives me nuts when I am trying to sleep! Any suggestions other than changing the unit? Thanks

Electric baseboard heaters heat by radiant heat. This mean the heater is heating the metal of the heater first which causes expansion of the metal. This will cause popping metal sounds becouse it is heating up. When it kicks off, by the thermostat, it starts to cool which causes contraction of metal. This will also cause noise. Most all base board heaters I have installed and worked on does this. Sorry there is little to nothing you can do. :)

My water heater emits a loud high pitched whistle when it is venting. Any ideas how to correct this?

I have an AquaStar tankless and it has started making that high pitched sound when in use. I wonder if that means I have clean the heat exchanger. I called Bosch but they won't help since it is installed in a bathroom--in violation.

How do I wire up a F2544 baseboard heater with a single pole themostat

It sounds like you are not getting the correct voltage for the heating element. If you wired a single pole thermostat, and its a 220v unit, then it will not get hot enough, like you are saying. If its a 220 heater, you need a 2p2t thermostat. The parts supplier will know what this means.
