on the bottom plate are 3 spots, one in the center and one at each corner, that need a flat head screw driver to loosen. turn left to unlock, this will remove the plate so you can clear the debris from the brush.

SOURCE: How to replace belt on Dyson DC17

Preface: Dyson folks were great, answer so simple I was embarassed after I called. 5 minute fix.
1. Loosen 3 screws from bottom plate using flathead screwdriver or coin edge and remove it.
2. Wiggle roller until it pulls straight out.
3. Squeeze new belt and loop it over metal drive gear (you'll easily see the gear).
4. Keeping belt on gear, insert edge of roller through belt and rotate the roller while pushing it through belt until it is inside the belt, then continue rotating roller and sliding it over until belt is in position over gears on roller.
5. Insert roller into slots on that it came out of, reattach bottom cover and its done.

SOURCE: Power shuts off on my dyson dc17 animal

I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.

So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....

Right next to the power switch is a switch that will turn on/off the beater brush. Push firmly on this button and see if that turns it back on. It will turn itself off if it has too much resistance on it from getting tangled in something like a long carpet fiber that wraps itself around the beater brush. Check and make sure it's not bound up by something and then press the on/off button for the beater brush.

My dc17 has dust coming from under beater bar when sweeping

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If debris seems to be coming back out of the cleaner head, there may be a blockage in the machine. To locate and remove any blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=955&product=DC17-ANIMAL

You may also want to give the filter a wash - in normal use this should be done at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us on 1-866-693-9766 - or if you email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in touch as soon as possible to provide assistance.

Best wishes,

My Dyson Absolute DC17 is becoming difficult to push

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If the cleaner seems to have become difficult to push, you may want to check that the base of the soleplate is clean. If it appears to be dirty, you can clean it using a damp cloth - always make sure it's totally dry before replacing it on the cleaner.

While you have the soleplate removed, it's a good idea to check that the cleaner head is free of blockages, and that the brushbar is free of any threads or hair. For guidance on removing the soleplate and performing these checks, please see follow the steps shown in our support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=955&product=DC17-ANIMAL

If the soleplate appears to be damaged, or if you find that following these steps doesn't resolve your issue, please get in touch with us directly so we can provide further assistance. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Loss of suction in handle

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If your cleaner has good pickup through the cleaner head, but not through the wand, you may have a blockage in the system. The easiest way to check for and remove blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMAL

It's also a good idea to give the filter a wash - the correct way to do this is demonstrated in the video linked below:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1463&product=DC17-ANIMAL

By following these steps you should be able to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you're still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you, and recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Red light comes on and there is a smell. Have not had any problems before. Help and thanks, Karen

Hi Karen,

Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your Dyson cleaner. From what you've described, it sounds as if you may have a DC28 Animal, rather than a DC17 Animal. The on/off switch flashing is designed to warn you that there's an obstruction in the cleaner head, which may be jamming the brushbar. The easiest way to check for and remove an obstruction is to follow the simple steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1241&product=DC28-ANIMAL

Hopefully by removing any blockages from the cleaner head, you should resolve your issue. However, if you've followed these steps and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly so one of our experts can run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you and provide further assistance. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

My vacuum was working fine just a minute ago, and i turned it off to finish laundry, and now when i go to use it again, the handle won't recline... is there something stuck??

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your DC17. The cleaner should recline easily into the vacuuming position when you place one foot on the cleaner head, and tilt the handle back. If it's not doing this, please get in touch with us free on 1866MYDYSON, or email askdysonUS@dyson.com. One of our experts will be happy to provide further assistance.

I don't get much suction from the hose on my DC17 All Floors. I don't see any obtacles in the hose. The suction when upright is fine.

Hello,

The way your Dyson DC17 is designed, there is a suction divert mechanism that diverts the suction to floor when the vacuum cleaner head is pushed down, and then back to the hose when the vacuum is in the upright position. If you are getting suction from the hose when the vacuum is upright, but no suction after the handle is reclined, this is actually the normal function for the Dyson DC17.

You can check to see if the filter is dirty. The washable filter on your Dyson DC17 is located directly underneath of the dust bin of the vacuum cleaner. After removing the dust bin, lift straight up on the part the bottom of the dust bin rests on. This is where the pre-motor filter is located for the DC17 models. If this filter is not cleaned on a regular basis, then it can start getting clogged, and you'll notice a loss of suction on the vacuum cleaner.

If you have further questions, please visit the link below where you may download the instruction manual. There are some trouble shooting guides at the back of the manual that you may do to try and diagnosis this further.
