SOURCE: craftsman tiller engine slows way down and dies when tines engaged then leaks gas through air filter, what do I need to fix?

Hi gelkins056

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your caburetor jets, fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Check/Clean/Replace your Air Filter, a dirty air filter can make your engine run to rich with fuel.
Note: ALWAYS USE COMPRESSED AIR TO CLEAN YOUR JETS AND PASSAGES, VERY IMPORTANT.
Note:Before you disassemble the carburetor:
Write down on a piece of paper and or take a picture of how the linkage attaches to your carburetor for later reference when you go to reinstall your carburetor.
Mark each piece with a awl, or some kind of sharp instrument that will make an alignment scratch before you disassemble the carburetor into separate pieces.
That way you will know which way it goes back together when you reassemble it.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or by using a very small shot of starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that, and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Check you fuel line/s condition...after a while they will degrade and need replacement.
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one.
When you remove your fuel lines from the carburetor be sure to make a drawing or take a picture of how the lines are connected to the carburetor.
Also a good time to take a picture for later reference for reassembly.
If the mower is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
The diaphgram may look good and flexible, but it can be deceiving and not act as a fuel pump as it should because it has become too hard and will cause hard starting, start and run and shut off, etc.
When you clean your carburetor, I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use COMPRESSED AIR to blow out all the fuel and air passages. The higher air pressure is needed to blow some of the trash/debris from the fuel or air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit, or you could also ask the parts man that you get your kit from.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their original position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor cleaned/rebuilt that should solve your problem.

Craftsman tiller model 2l47.399300 will not crank

Remove the spark plug and see if it is wet. If it's dry, you will need to disassemble and clean the carburetor. It is probably all green inside from stale gasoline.

I have a craftsman Air-cooled, 2-cycle mini tiller.

first make sure the motor isn't engaged when trying to start it, and If it has been sitting for awhile, (in between seasons), It's likely that the carb is clogged, try cleaning it out, make sure the spark plug is firing correctly. And if it's getting spark, and its getting fuel, but still wont start, then the carb may need adjusting.

I own a 2 cycle mini tiller craftsman and I need a manual for it. I want to tune up tiller it's blowing smoke.

Manuals for many Craftsman tools are available here: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals . Lots of tillers are listed just by searching for Craftsman tiller. If you can find the model number (usually on a plaque on the housing of the tiller), you can narrow down the list greatly.

I hope this helps.

We have a rototiller, craftsman, bought new at sears several years ago. Model No. 944627591, Craftsman 9 HP, 21 inch tine width, rear tine tiller with counter rotting tines. Pinion input gear is sheared...

The model ID starting in 944 indicates your tiller was manufactured by Husqvarna. This division has since been purchased by AYP. A quick online search finds that www.needlawnmowerparts.com lists having one for $55 plus shipping. I have not dealt with this company, so I can't recommend or not recommend them.
It is very common for tiller makers to not offer internal transmission parts. Transmissions are difficult at best to repair and reassemble. Used tillers are available from time to time, check your local classified ads or www.craigslist.com to find one. If you decide to go with a new tiller, i would recommend trying www.northerntools.com or www.mytsc.com to start your search.
As far as longevity on the new transmission, Sears won't guarantee any of their parts longer than 1 year. However, you should expect a replacement part to last as long as the first one did.
Sears doesn't give year models for their equipment, but usually supports replacement parts for at least 10 years. Most equipment manufacturers don't build their units to last longer than 10 years....they want you to buy another one.
I hopethis has helped.
Good luck!

I need a manual for model 842252441 craftsman rear mount tiller. I bought a new engine for my tiller and am having a problem with exchanging the new for the old specifically the crankshaft.

I was looking at various manuals available for craftsman tow-behind tillers. If you click this link you'll find 7 models of craftsman tow-behind tillers listed. While I didn't find your exact model, one or more of these manuals might be useful.

Also, I noticed that on the 486.252442 manual, it mentioned contacting info@agri-fab.com. Sears has rebranded many company's products as Craftsman over the years. I suspect in this case, Sears repackaged a Agri Fab 71-252441 as the 842252441. I found a few web sites selling a paper manual for the 71-252441, but I didn't find anywhere to download an electronic copy.

Agri-Fab's website is www.agrifab.com and their contact page lists a toll free contact number (800) 448-9282. Their web site had manuals for 6 tow-behind tillers, but none of the models obviously matches up. You may be able to look at them and ID your model better than I. You could also try giving them a call maybe someone can ID their model number for your tiller.

Hope this helped. If so, please give it a thumbs up!

Can't find filler plug on transmission

Jim the older tillers did not have a place to put grease in. You have to break the case apart then it takes 00 grease. These are sealed units and don't need additional grease. Check with Sears.com parts lookup for a new manual. I am on my second Craftsman r/t tiller now rebuilt the transmission on the first and wore it completly out then bought a new about 8 years ago. About to rebuild the transmission on it.
