we have tried installing at least 10 times purchased new usb cables still does not work

Stopped the initial installation because printer cable was already connected.

Re-started and never able to complete. Asked for CD for printer and Windows 98 disc..

Never had trouble installing this same model on several computers running at least XP

You have to connect the printer cable to USB port of the PC then download the drivers(If you already have the CD you can skip this step)..

Install the driver , restart the computer(IT will usually prompt you to restart)and start using..

HP says to install the HP inkjet 990C driver. They say it will work with all the HP All in One Printers. If you can find the 990C driver in your 98SE install drivers, tell me. I need one.

I understand that you need windows 98 drivers for your Notebook.

I have searched the HP website and found the drivers for the following operating systems.

Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows XP Home edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Windows Vista Home
Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise
Microsoft Windows Vista Business

But not for Microsoft Windows 98...

Windows 98 is considered to be obsolete now. As far as I know no one will provide drivers for this model Notebook for Windows 98. Please install atleast Windows 2000 in the Notebook for the drivers to work correctly.

Do you have HP solution center installed on the computer? You need this software on you PC to scan correctly. You can download it from HP here:

Just pick the exact model you have and correct operating system (Windows XP, Windows 98, Mac OS 10.5) then pick the bundle/full feature driver and install that and your scanner should allow you to scan to you PC. You may find it less of a hassle to scan from the PC by using HP software and selecting scan.

HP OJ 5610 Drivers-? Can not install printer.

In this case, there's no mystery as to the cause of the problem. You will be unable to use this printer with your operating system because there are no existing print drivers that work with 64 bit Vista. Your printer will work with Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, but not with Vista at all.

You have only two options...use a different HP printer that will work with Vista, or get a PC that has one of the supported operating systems on it and connect your current printer to that PC.

Sorry. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but that's the best I can do until the proper drivers become available.
