Checking serial number on a $50 to see if it's counterfeit
Although the serial number can be forged there are othe ways to tell if a note may be counterfeit. If this is a US note check to make sure the security strip is in the note by holding it up to a light source. There should be a strip running from top to bottom norrow way that is embedded in the bill and has the value imprinted on the strip repeatably. Another way to tell is look at the paper of the bill does it have red and blue fibers in the paper, these red and blue fibers can not be reproduced unless the counterfeiter has acquired US treasury paper. Also while looking at a light source see that there is water mark, usually the water mark is of the face on the bill. The next solution is to take the bill to market preferably to one where you know a cashier that can use the bill check pen they usually have. This pen when marked on the bill turns to a certain color if the bill is real, usually gold otherwise it stays black.
