How to replace the motherboard in a Compaq D510 computer

The Compaq D510 desktop computer uses a U-ATX size motherboard that is smaller than the standard ATX size. If the motherboard on your Compaq computer has stopped working or you want to upgrade to a different motherboard with different expansion slots you can open the case and replace the motherboard.

to replace the motherboard, just follow these steps:

  • Double click on the "Smart Cover" icon on the desktop. Enter in the Smart Cover lock code if you have set one up and click on "Unlock" to disengage the hardware lock that prevents the case panel from being opened.

  • 2

Click on the "Start" button at the bottom toolbar of the desktop and choose "Shut Down." Unplug all of the cables from the back of the computer once it has finished powering down.

  • 3

Set the Compaq computer case on its side and remove the two screws connected to the top and bottom ends of the case panel. Slide the panel to the left and pull it directly off the case.

  • 4

Disconnect the SATA cables running from the power supply, drive bays and processor fan to the motherboard. Remove the screws holding any expansion cards you may have previously installed into the AGP ports on the lower right side of the motherboard and then pull the cards out.

  • 5

Pull back the clamp holding the processor fan on. Pull the fan and then the processor off of the motherboard. Pull off the RAM modules from the motherboard.

  • 6

Remove the screws holding the motherboard into place and pull the entire motherboard directly out of the case. Check the orientation of the replacement motherboard and make sure the USB ports and AGP expansion card slots are facing towards the back of the case. Lay the new motherboard down into the case onto the mounting screws sticking out of the bottom panel.

  • 7

Place the processor back into its socket on the motherboard and connect the fan on top. Snap back on the fan clamp. Place the RAM modules back into their slots. Re-connect all of the SATA cables to the drive bays and power supply.

  • 8

Set the side panel back onto the case and re-connect the case screws. Connect all of the cables into the back of the case and power the computer back on. Wait for the operating system to load to make sure the motherboard is working properly.

  • 9

Navigate back to the Smart Cover program, enter in the password, and press the "Lock" button.

    What is the expansion bay?

The expansion bay is a 3.5" bay designed to house a harddrive and network adaptor for use with certain online games. You need to buy the Playstation Hard Disk Drive accessory if you have a PS@ with one of these expansion bays and would like to use the features it offers, although online play functions and the overall online gaming experience via the PS may be limited given the age of the console and most gamer's migration to newer, different consoles.

My expansion bay will not open.

Try to open the lid above the button with your nail, you'll see a metal plating covering the inside of it.The expansion bay is to add another drive, like a Cd/Dvd drive. Just don't worry about it too much, when you ad the new drive, you can take the plating off.Whoever adds the drive will open it up,too

    Upgrading System Memory
You can expand memory by installing memory expansion boards.
Installation is performed easily by lifting the computer keyboard
and inserting the memory expansion board. To order a memory
expansion board, contact your Compaq authorized reseller. Refer
to the instruction card that comes with the option kit for
    installation procedures.
IMPORTANT: If you upgrade memory, the computer increases the
Hibernation file size to accommodate the additional memory.
When the Hibernation files increases, it requires more hard disk

Once you read this section and you know what your ram sticks are labeled you can go to e-bay and type it into the search and it will show you all for sale. I buy all my ram on e-bay. It's the cheapest place to by it. Just make sure you buy it from someone on e-bay that has quite a few feedback, this means they have been doing business on e-bay for some time.

Hope this helps, let me know if I can do anything else for you.

Make sure it is in the expansion bay properly, if it is not connected, it might not work. if it still does not work, add a different network or sound card to that bay and see if it works, if not, your PC's expansion bay is damaged, if it does work, you need a different Network card

    Expansion bay for playstation 2

Odds are you may have a dirty or loose connection in the bay, worst case scenario you may have to reformat the HDD and reinstall, sometimes if the bay gets dirty and you continue to play the game, data is lost and it can corrupt the HDD information over time. Good news is it isn't likely that it's "Broken" try cleaning the bay connection, if the ps2 reads the HDD but still doesen't play FFXI you can try formatting and reinstalling.

    Hope this helps.
