Question about Computers & Internet

Open Question

Good morning I have set up my new Zoostorm pc and tried to make connections to two separate external network drives that I have purchased. The first network drive which I connected through my broadband connection, could not been located on the pc. I involved my Technical Computer advisor and he spent 4 hours checking all the settings and tried the unit at his home using the same broadband connection. He concluded that the unit was faulty and I returned the unit for refund. I purchased and installed a WD Live Duo external network drive. The pc could not at first find the drive. After support from WD the drive could be seen on My Computer but when the WDSmartware was run and the dashboard displayed for a back up process the WD drive was not shown. Over five days WD Support has checked all the settings and connections that they believe could be an issue and still the WDSmartware cannot detect the drive. I installed the WDSmartware on my laptop and the drive is displayed in the dashboard ready for a backup to be made. The conclusion is that as the WD network drive is working on the laptop then there must be an issue with the pc. The pc was purchased through Amazon with Windows 7 Home edition installed. Windows back up is not available on the Home edition. Do you have any experience of network drives not working on Zoostorm pc's? Do you have any advice on any settings to be checked/changed or other action that can be taken to operate a backup. David Hillman

SOURCE: Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 200 GB... Problem

Its going to be a hardware thing. Is the drive connected to a UB2 port? The network itself has its own data transfer rate  ( ie. gigabit ) you need to make sure you cables are no longer than 6 ft, its plugged into a high speed port, and that all ports on the chain are of the same speed. If you have the option, go firewire for this. If that does not rectify it, check adminsitrator properties of the drive.

SOURCE: External USB Drives No Longer Detected

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

SOURCE: I connected the external floppy drive to a USB hub

Yes, the external floppy drive must be connected directly to a USB port on the computer instead of to a USB hub.The PC can't see the drive thru the USB hub. Applies to both 32 and 64 bit.

I have a 2003 Dell Dimension 4600 and the network adapter is testing fine. However I am unable to access broadband internet and email through a wired USB/Ethernet connection to external modem. Both the...

the hard wired connection to the modem could be a system configuration issue, the cable has gone bad, or the modem is having connectivity issues with the service.
if your optical drives are not working physically, then you can't really fix that. if they just arent responding properly or Windows cant detect that they are there, then you may need to reinstall the driver software for the drives. which can be found on the Dell website or the manufacturer of the optical drives.
yes you can set up a wireless connection with a USB adapter but the modem also needs to have wireless capability in order for you to create the connection.
there are external USB optical drives available. so you can purchase a usb connected CD/DVD drive or burner. they shouldnt be very expensive nowadays.

Bought a new computer. would like to download from old to new.

Three choices

Networking:
  • Get a 4-port wireless router (wireless for future upgrades like wireless printers, laptops or WirelessNetworkAccessStorage). Belkin has lifetime warranty and great customer support. Linksys is Cisco's generic line. They're good too because of who makes them, but sometimes* a headache to set up.
  • Set up your router via the instruction that come with it. Take care when naming the connection or SSD as this cannot contain any offensive language, due to FCC regulations.
  • Disable the wireless aspect or set a wireless password.
  • Set the entire drive(s) on your old PC for sharing by right clicking on the drive in Windows Explorer, selecting Sharing & Security and checking the appropriate boxes after being warned that you are about to share the drive.. or just share each individual folder you wish to move.
  • Create a new folder somewhere on your new computer, but never in Windows or Program Files. Desktop is fine but don't clutter it with a bunch of icons, in ... or put new folder in My Documents.
  • Hook up both computers by plugging each into a port on the router.
  • Start the Network Setup Wizard from Control Panel. Your network type will be "Other" and click Next, put a tick by "... computers connect through a hub..." and click Next. Put a tick in the appropriate boxes, clicking next, repeat until you get to the computer name, etc. Name your new computer, give a description (like One of Two, One of Five, Two of Three) of your computer. Create a Network name on the next page, it'll probably already say HOME, MSHOME or WORKPLACE. You can name it whatever you want. Now you will have a different box that asks if you wish to enable printer and file sharing. Say yes, Okay out of the warning after you read it and then click Next after reviewing the info. Create a Network Disc or just do the same on the new computer.
  • Reboot both machines
  • Go to My Network Places on the new computer
  • You should see the shared drive, click on it and move your files to your new computer.
All the old components in your old system are most likely still sought by others. Whether it be memory, processors, Power Supply, CD-Roms or the MotherBoard and a lot of teh parts can be switched over to your new computer... including the old hard drive. Do not give anyone the License Key off the back of your old computer. That can be used on another computer you own, but only one, under the changed hardware clause of the contract. If purchased new and someone privateers that key from you, you can still contact microsoft as owner and reactivate your new PC with the key, by telling them you have changed hardware. That will put an end to the use of the computer with the stolen key unless Windows Updates was compromised.

Expanding:
Your new system should have bays for more drives. By adding the old drive as a slave drive on the second HDD Controller you can give yourself more storage space.

External Hard Drive Enclosure: (These can be purchased separately, with no hard drive installed)
Open the enclosure, plug your drive into it & close the enclosure
Power on your new system
Plug the new drive into the power receptacle/surge protector
Plug it into your USB connection (or however it connects to your PC)
Windows should discover the drive immediately and ask what you wish to do. Open the drive with Windows Explorer and copy the files you want to your new drive

Do not try and copy WINDOWS folder to your new system or any programs unless programs are stand alone. If the programs require installation, use the disk. Anything else could cause instability on your new system if moved to the wrong place.

Try changing the boot sequence in your CMOS setup, set your Main hard drive(I think it's IDE 0) and the rest is up to you whethere you will set the CD-ROM or the external HDD as the 2nd boot device. Once the computer starts just press DEL(most generic computers but for brand specific check the manual on how to access it) to enter the CMOS Setup.
