Question about Dell Dimension 8300 PC Desktop
I'm attempting to use the telephone provision within Gmail. I've downloaded the program & can dial out & hear the person on the other end say "hello, hello....is anyone there?" but my microphone apparently isn't working. I have an old early 80's stereo mic (it's nice...aa battery powered - works fine hooked up to a tape recorder) run into a single 3.5mm plug adapter & it's plugged into the proper/upper mic input on the rear of the tower. There's a "sound blaster live" card installed (but I don't know if this is relative) - there's only the wide white connector utilized, with the other "tad/CD in/AUX in" connections unused. What should I do to get the microphone working? We have a skype camera, but have never used it...it that the solution? I'd prefer to use just a microphone.
Just go and buy a microphone on its own, they are cheap maybe 10, it will plug in and work perfectly, you have over complicated yourself

SOURCE: No microphone works
I work for Dell and had the same problem.
Take the card out of the PCI slot and reinstall it. Then go to the creative support website and download all the updated drviers for the card. ALSO, and this may sound blindly obviously but the soundblaster has many connections on it make sure you are plugging it into the correct connection and that you have enabled the soundblaster in the systems settings ie- turn the on board sound off.
Hope this works,

Depending on what soundcard driver you have, you may need to set it as a mic input.
Also, when you do get the vinyl/digital bridged, you'll need a way to record it. There are cards specifically for recording, which use hardware encoders - but if that's not something you want to shell out for, you need the software to record. Adobe Audition is a premier recording / editing system which would be your best choice, most likely. Unfortunately, it also costs quite a bit of money. Sadly, I do not know of a cheap or free recording suite at the moment.

SOURCE: Microphone not working
Make sure the device is not muted in the audio properties of whatever software you are running. Most audio programs will allow you disable it.
You should be able to go to Sounds and Audio devices in the control panel to test. Under the voice tab is a button to test hardware. Check there as well.
Hope this helps.

double click on the speaker and make sure that the mic does not have the mute box with an x in it.
I am pretty certain you have a card in your computer for it mentions a 7.1 speaker system.
If you put your service code in to do a search for drivers you will get the correct ones for your particular machine. Download install and reboot.
If you are not using six speakers and one sub woofer then the pink one in the back is the mic
