Question about Rheem 50 Gallon FVR NATGAS Water Heater 6YR 22V50F1

1 Answer

Gas water heater goes cool

After just a minute or 2, normal hot water turns cool. Heater is 12 years old and has not been flushed for at least 5 years. Gas fires right up after hot water is run.

I did replace the dip tube. Curiously, the old one was intact, no sign of deterioration or breaking off, but it was only about 1/2 as long as the tank--about 2.5 ft long. I replaced it with one that extends to within 6 in of bottom.

That improved things, but now the shower is the prime suspect. All the other faucets in the house are hot and seem to stay hot, maybe cool a little, but the shower goes tepid, warm pretty fast (like from about 125 deg to maybe hot tub temp--maybe 100-105 deg). I thought there maybe some gunk plugging the hot inlet, so I removed the cartridge (Moen single control valve). The water came out clear, no sediment at all. Replaced the cartridge for the heck of it, but no noticeable difference--just warm not hot enough for a comfortably warm mix. I'm stumped!

The dip tube which carries the incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank is bad/gone. If you can find a rheem dealer you MAY be able to get a new one but it's probably time for a new water heater

I have a leak coming from the "cold" line right at the valve joint. There is signifigant calcuim build up on the pipe from the valve to the connection of the water heater, (maybe 8 inch of pipe)...

Very simple - call a Plumber. He will fix your plumbing problem, and any foreseen potential problems related to your water leak. He may also suggest replacing your 6 year old water heater. Of course ..... for a professional cost.
However, depending on your time, skills, proper tools, patience and luck, it's easy enough to perform yourself:
1. Switch off the water heater Breakers (220v) in your service panel.
2. Turn off the water supply to the water heater.
3. Attach a water hose to the drain faucet. ( a good time to flush sediment -calcium deposits)
4. Open a hot water faucet to vent (above the level of the water heater drain - kitchen sink)
5. Remove the suspected leak components. (a union connection is a good place to start)
6. Install New pipes -3 wrap all male threaded ends with teflon Tap. Tighten securely - using 2 wrenches.
NOTE: Before refilling - you can turn on the water heater supply valve for a few minutes, to flush out any lingering calcium debris.
7. Shut off drain valve - remove hose. Shut off venting hot water faucet.
8. Turn on water supply valve to fill water heater.
9. Open a hot water faucet to relieve air pressure while filling - preferably the bath tub faucet, it doesn't have a screen that might clog.
10. When water flows without air - shut off tub faucet.
11. Look for leaks.
12. Switch the water heater Breakers on.
Note: 50 gallons should take an hour or more to heat up. Turn on a hot water valve momentarily within this heat up time to relieve thermal expansion. ( the PT valve on your water heater will perform this task if pressures/temperature exceed new water heater tolerances - it's just a precaution to introduce these fluctuating pressures on your fragile 6 year old unit)

These are just basic instructions - assuming you fill in the common sense and work safe steps.
Good Luck - The Skill will only come after trying.

I pipe (sump pump connection) near the hot water heater was leaking and the botton portion of the 'hot water heater' got wet, now the 'hot water heater' will not turn on. Should i assume the 'heater' is...

1) Electric heater, do not touch electric heater that is wet or has been wet unless power is 100% off.
2) Gas heater: Same applies to gas heater if controls are electronic, or if electric is grounded to hot water pipe.

3) Manufactures suggest replacing water heater that has been flooded.
Warranty is voided.
Set next heater higher.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html

4) Electric: You can replace thermostats and elements, but if insulation is wet, the unit could short and be continual electrocution danger >>> and you can't operate electric heater with covers removed because cool air will keep thermostats from reading correct temperature.
5) Gas: You can clean out combustion chamber and replace gas valve and burner assembly, but new heater from local hardware or box store will save time and possibly money.

6) Use old heater as tempering tank if incoming water is cold:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Tempering-tank.html
Or use old tank as solar collector:

If incoming water is too cold, tankless might not have enough time to heat the water as it flows by insince the heat exchanger.

1) You can passively preheat cold water using staging tank, or tampering tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Tempering-tank.html

2) Buy old water heater from plumber that is not rusted out.
Replace anode rod to stop further rust.
Rinse tank with water and hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria that results from anode rod.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
Clean sediment out of bottom:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

3) Don't forget, a tankless heater needs to be de-limed each year, and cannot be exposed to more than 11 grains hard water.

4) Since all costs are energy, when you get tired of messing with tankless.

My Rheem electric hot water heater occasionally leaks water then stops completely. This has done this three times now over the pact couple years.

It sounds like TP valve is releasing water, but you don't describe where water is located.
Run through process-of-elimination check list on following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

1) If problem is TP valve, event could be caused by 'stacking'
Stacking is where you draw amounts of hot water many times in succession.
Top part of heater is plenty hot because water heater is keeping up with hot water draw.
Incoming cold water enters bottom of tank through dip tube causing thermostat to read cool temperature and activate burner or element. This causes higher than ordinary temperatures at upper part of tank and TP valve reacts by releasing water.

2) TP valve could be going bad.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-TP-valve.html

3) Improper venting can cause gas water heater to have water on top of tank or dripping down inside tank where it shows on floor after rusting out combustion chamber.

4) Thermostats are old or not reading correct temperature.
Turn down thermostats:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html
Replace gas valve on gas water heater, and flush tank.

if you have build up in the heat exchanger it will cause the unit to use more gas to heat your water, if the gas line isn't sized properly then your going to kick the error codes off. it sounds like you have two problems, first you have build up in your heat exchanger and it needs to be flushed and second you need to get a bigger gas line to it

How old is the heater? If it is more then a few years old then I would suggest flushing the heater. IT is a lengthy process so "google-ing" it will give you detailed instructions about doing it. It is possible that there is a sediment build-up in the heater causing the problem.
