Question about Kenmore 91495 Compact Refrigerator

1 Answer

Kemore compact refrigerator

Kenmore Compact Refrigerator model 564.9149910 (4.9 CF) is freezing everything inside, regardless of the temp control. It's a no freezer compartment unit which mean I don't have to defrost. It's great and lasted me 15 years. Do they make this Kemore compact Frig any more? Or should I try to get it fix or will this problem still keep coming up again and again? Is it worth it to have a Sears Tech fix it: $130./tech, $150 for the part = $350/repair as compare to getting a new G.E. 5.9 CF for $349.00 but has a small non-defrost freezer compartment which means I'll have to defrost it every 2 months.

It sounds like the temperature control is inoperative. They aren't too hard to replace, and $150 seems high for a control, but If replacing it is not something you or a friend could do, then a new refrigerator seems like the best choice for you.
Nothing lasts forever, and if you have already got 15 years of service out of it, then it would be a bad gamble to put that much money in a repair. I'd buy a new one and sell your old one on Craigslist to someone willing to fix it. You may find that you can go a lot longer than two weeks between defrosts during drier parts of the year, and the 'fridge isn't going to care if you go a lot longer than you think is necessary between defrost cycles.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the solution. The feelings are mixed...pro/con...to get the compact frig fix or not. It's a Kenmore so I called Sears. I got a different quote: I found out it's a one time $95.00/service visit charge. Now that I know from you (before I didn't know) that it's the thermostat, the part is $39.99. With Sears parts, you have to KNOW WHAT PART IS MALFUNCTIONING to do it yourself without a service tech. My dad had GIRLS...so none of us girls married any handyman type husbands. I just went out and bought a G.E. compact frig through Home Depot, free delivery and the 5 year extended warranty for $110.00...comes out to be about $22./yr headache free for 5 years!!! But if I found this website earlier to inquired about the fix it solution, I might have just called Sears and get the thermostat repaired ($150.00 service charge & part) and keep the comp frig going for another 15 years. Yes, I do believe EVERYTHING LASTS forever (at least in MY lifetime) as long as there is a replacement part for it."

I'l glad you found a comfortable solution to the problem. I have an opinion on extended warranties that I'll share, although it may not be for you. Over the decades, I have made it a policy to never purchase an extended warranty and have never regretted it. Many sources concur, that in the long run you are ahead by skipping them. For most products, the manufacturer's warranty will catch failures caused by defective components, manufacturer's errors, etc. Generally, once you get past the period of likely infant mortality failures, things remain steady until you enter the time when wear-out starts causing problems. Your extended warranty may catch an infant mortality failure outside the manufacturer's warranty, but probably it will have expired when things start wearing out. Recently, I have purchased extended warranties on expensive electronic items that are hard to repair, but I've never had a claim. If you have second thoughts about your extended warranty, but still would like some coverage, check the warranties at Square Trade on the web. You might be able to boost the warranty a bit beyond the mfr warranty to feel comfortable, and save a lot of $ in the process.

SOURCE: Crisper draws are freezing produce. Kenmore Trio 795.77562.600

If you can find the duct work behind the draws you might find an air control, if you have a contract with Sears - you can call them back, the part that was replaced has a Garn.T and or 30 days on service, when you ajust the temps it may sometime act up but has a default and will return to that. Cold air drops down. read the manual that came with the Refrig. Buying a service contract might be the best thing for piece of mind - Sears covers everything, even plactic and paint ( scratches). most everything is plastic in the refrigerators today and are very expensive, 3 doors allow more air into the unit then a 2 door because of the seal between the doors, just 2 pieces of rubber overlapping .
Act on this as fast as you can, 30 days on service goes fast and a service call runs about 75 dollars . Oh ! don't put wet veggies in draw and rap everything with Plastic wrap, veggies only least about 4 /5 days then become soft and lose taste and color.

Hello,
For me I think you have a problem in Thermostat switch contact. Or the rotary switch was not in good contact point, better check it and if still the same, proceed to check your thermocouple if functioning.

Everything inside is frozen no matter what it is set at

The thermostat is very likely the cause in this case. Finding a model number like this example=> 362.154879 on the Compact Refrigerator will help you find the part number. Or unplug the refrigerator and disconnect the two wires on thermostat along with the mounting screws and then take the thermostat to a local refrigeration parts supplier. They can test and help you find a matching replacement thermostat, Hope this helps, Thanks Sea Breeze

New kemore compact won't get cold, motor runs ok but won't turn off

If it's new (under 5 years of age) it is under factory warranty, if it's a sealed system failure. Bad compressor, refrigerant leaks, or restrictions in the connecting tubing.
Contact Sears with complete model and serial number.

Refrigerator freezes everything even on the lowest setting

Is everything really frozen or just the top shelf stuff? You may have a thermistor (temp sensor) problem if the compressor just runs and runs and runs all the time. Take a glass of water and place a thermometer in it for about 3 hours then take a temp. reading. That will let you know what the real temps are. See if you can cause the compressor to kick off and on by changing the temp settings (go to real low for about 5 minutes then back up to high). Let us know what happens.
